95 Aurora Stuck in second gear

I have a 1995 Olds Aurora, seems to be stuck in second gear..... I took it in had it hooked up and said that the solinoid's were bad, Took it to the tranny shop and had them both replaced, plu sthe brackets........

Drove this wonderful car for 3 days, 100 miles and now it's doing the same thing as before but now when I turn the car on the engine light is on when before it would only come on when up to speed......

Took it back to the tranny shop and the pulled it apart again thinking they may have gotten a bad set of solinoids, nope they were fine, seeing they had the car apart they put a new set in anyway..... Still no luck..... Took it back to the shop to have it put on the computer and no codes come up they say that everything is in great working order and it must be somthing in the tranny itself? Anyone had this problem? To rebuild my tranny they quoted me $3700.00...... That's not a option for me........ Anyone have any other suggstions on what it may be?

Thanks for looking!

Nik

If it were me I'd pull the valve body back off and check for blockages. Seems a little odd to be doing the same thing after it was just worked on. If you can't look at it yourself. Get a second opion.

I have not made up my mind yet as to if I am going to replace the tranny in this car or not yet but was wondering how I can tell which tranny I have in my car...... If I understand correctly, are there two differnt tranny's in these cars...... If so, how can I find out which one is in my car?

Thanks

Nope.Only one tranny for that car.(4T80-E) Have you tried leaving the car in 3rd gear to see if it shifts up the 3rd and stays there? Also what did you scan it with?

We have tried to just put the car in third but still no luck....... We had it scanned at a local auto shop and at the tranny shop, Tomorrow I am taking the car to the dealer to have it scanned there also.....

THe only reason I ask about two different tranny's is because I was thinking about just buying a used tranny and I went to car-part.com and here are my choces for a 95 oldsmobile aurora.........

A.T., 3.71 ratio opt FV4
or
A.T., 3.48 ratio opt FQ2

Can you tell me what the difference is in these?

Thanks much!

Have you checked the engine mounts ? Linkages bound ?
if these cars arent JUST RIGHT they'll run you in circles
Only let someone familiar with a 95 work on it. Training your mechanic can cost you a lot of money

Well that you for all you reply's.......

I am very happy to say that my car is FINALLY fixed....... It ended up being a shorted out wire in the tranny....... I am very happy that that is all it ended up being........

Thanks Again.....

what wire was shorted?
Was it easy (and cheap) to fix?

I had to take the car to the dealer and they took the bottom pan off the tranny....... Unsure as to which wire was shorted......... All I do know is that parts cost me $5.00 and the labor was $300.00 (4.5 hrs). They had hooked the car up to the computer and were getting a whole bunch of Tranny codes so tey figured it had to be a shorted wire......... Considering the cost of a new tranny or a rebuild, I thought this price was great!!!!!!!!

Good luck?

What seems to be the problem with yours?

showing code 94
Sometimes will only operate in 2nd
Ive never got it to do that but PO said this.
he said dealer told him bad wiring harness.
I looked it up and its 9.5 hrs labor to replace that.

Nikkel97, Seems like the shop should have worked with you on the labor. If it was a wire the first time it was never fixed correctly and if it was a shorted wire the second time they must have pinched it some how when they did the solenoids.

William,

I would have thought that same way BUT the first time I took it to a local Tranny shop who fixed the solinoids, then three days later I took it back to them because it was doing the same thing, they told me my tranny was junk and I needed to do a rebuild, which they were going to charge me $3700.00.... I think they were tired of dealing with the car and just shot me a price out of the dark..... That is way to high....... I had gotten other quotes of $1500.00...... but I figured it couldn't be the tranny itself because for the three days that I drove it it shifted perfectly, no slipping no nothing..... Finally i decided to take it to the dealer to see what they thought....... that's when they put it on the computer and a ton of tranny codes came up so they figured it had to be a short in one of the wires...... Can't blame the dealership, they didn't do the work..... Needless to say I will never take this car back to the local tranny shop.........

All in all it all worked out for me in the end...... I got a great deal on the car...... Only paid $750.00 for it, knowing it needed solinoids paid $500.00 for the replacement and another $300.00 for the wire fix........ So you figure $1550.00 in this great car, isn't all that bad...... It's to bad about the wire but I am just happy it's fixed............ I love the power it has!!!!!!!!!

I will have to look real close at the part of harness I can get to.
Seems like if they only charged $5 for parts it was only butt splices
and little tape.

Hello:

Yes, I had this happen, the shop ended up replacing the "TCM"
Transmission Control Moduel. I spend over $ 2,000.00 to get my car back on the road this included new motor mounts as well.

The trans went out at 136,700 miles, The car now has 165,000,
Since the trans was worked no problems.

Good luck

Just my opinion, but I think the tranny shop who mis-diagnosed the problem. Owe you a full refund. Since your Rora is running ok, you probably just want to write it off as a lost. I would be tempted to drag them into small claims court, to get my money back.
