The owner who sold me the 98 trans am has a 3" off road Y-pipe that he forgot to give when we got the car so hes shipping it up. I have 1 question. He claims you only use it when your racing. And it bolts up in place of the stock y-pipe. He claims the car will be louder to and will burn more gas. What does he mean. I know u gotta buy a new Y-pipe when you buy LT headers. Im confused can any1 help me.

Kinda got me confused as well.

Off-road means it doesn't have cats on it.

Not sure...but I am yet to see an LS1 car with a y-pipe that will just 'bolt' on.

I know SLP makes a Y-pipe for F-bodies that don't have headers. But it's 2.5" not 3". According to this:

Or maybe Macs ORY for stock manifolds

http://www.lmperformance.com/564/1.html

The only other thing I could think it might be is FLP has a LT header setup that has a removable catted Y-pipe that can be exchanged with an ORY pipe. But if that was the case then your car would have LT headers on it.

I'm thinking maybe it's the mac one. That would eliminate your cats which would make the car louder. But it's such a pain in the butt to swap that I would sell it and just get LT headers with an ORY or catted Y somewhere down the line.

Good Luck.

yeah cause the guy said you only use it when you go racing. So im assuming it is a bolt on, and can be swapped easily.

It’s been my experience that working on the exhaust on any car is never ease unless your cutting off the old exhaust and putting on a new one. The idea of a Y-pipe that you put on before a race and take off after is just stupid.

My guess is it was sold as a off-road pipe fore the same reason that neon lights are sold as off-road lights. The company selling them doesn’t actually expect people to put them on to race and then take them off after they just label them off-road so they can sell them legally.
