Okay well as we all know i drive a 79 trans am...what im wondering is since there is a quick shifter on it (being auto trans) is there a reason or just looks? when your racing do you start in 1 then go to 2 then D or what? i can race a manual like no other but when i got this car it had a rebuilt th-400 so i kept it (but when i get that new 502ci the trannys going to manual) anywho yea help me out what is the point of an quick shifter other than going from reverse to D with just a push up.

Completely wrong section to post this question in dude.

But, if you have a manual valve body in your tranny then you can manually shift your car and get better results because YOU get to choose the time your car shifts. A lot of auto trannys will shift to the next gear even if you have not moved the shifter up to the next gear. These are non-manual valve body equiped. Also, if I was you I'd keep the th400 when you go to the bigblock motor, dude. That tranny is pretty much the toughest tranny that GM has made for cars/light trucks. It's not as fun as a manual, but it'll hold up better than pretty much anything but a liberty 5 speed.

This would have been a much better question for the "off topic" section of the racing forums. All the same pricks that are in this forum go to that one as well. Just ask redneck, he's in there all the time. ;)

edit: "Non specific" forum.

hey man..

how ya doin?

man, just put it on D and floor it. because when u shift from 1 to 2 it doesnt engage right away and thats not good for racing. also your car doesnt shift red line?

l got auto too and my car shifts red line. on 6000 RPM. and if l would have manual l wouldnt pass 6000 RPM anyway. l have manual valve body too but l dont use it. because when l shift from 2 to 3 it does not engage right away. and that would definetely make me lose the race. l dont know how is yours. but l suggest u just put it on D and floor it. also it is not good for tranny.

im not sure but if i redlined my car i almost certain that would destroy the engine..to much power ( the stock tach was shorting out my eletrics so i unhooked it untill i get the time to find the problem) but from ear i would say she shifts at about 4 - 5 k when getting down on here hard. its kind of hard to tell when she shifts though with the shift kit..but pedal to the metal leaves anything i have found on the streets and track so far...but theres always faster
