ABS controller help needed

I have a 97 JGC. My ABS light has been staying on consistently the last several weeks. I had it checked by a mechanic who said the ABS controller had shorted out and needed to be replaced (common problem with this car).

Has anyone had any experience replacing this part? It looks fairly straightforward with the electrical plug and 4 hydraulic lines going into it. Any tips or instructions would be appreciated, I'd like to replace it myself instead of paying $300 in labor at the shop.

Thanks

Hello,
I just read your post on ABS Control replacement. This is a common problem with ZJ Grand Cherokees. The Control Unit is located under the Pump Unit and is fairly easy to replace without involving any hydraulic brake lines or fittings. You will have to remove the entire air filter assembly and the bracket that supports the ABS Control/Pump assembly to the inner fender. After removing the electrical harness connectors you can can carefully lift the Control/Pump assembly slightly with the brake lines still attached and separate the Control from the pump. It disengages from the Pump after you remove the four E5 TORX bolts from the bottom of the Control. An external E5 TORX socket is absolutely necessary to avoid stripping the bolt heads. Control Units are only available new at a cost of $400.00 +, however I had my Control Unit repaired and improved by Victor Rocha who specializes in Volvo's. They happen to use the same TEVES MARK 20 Unit as Jeep ZJs with only a slight difference in programming. Check out this site - home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/ . If you send him your bad unit he will check to see if it can be repaired [ Most can according to to him ] . I believe he charges $145.00 + $15.00 for shipping and insurance to to repair and improve the original unit. I only wish I had found out about him before I bought a new one. But now I have his repaired Unit in my '97 GC and it works great. I will save the new one for a back-up. I bought my Jeep new back in '97 and plan on keeping it for at least another ten years. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help, that's just what I needed. I'll give that a try.
