i was using meguars compound this morning over tamiya paint, no clear coat and it rubed through in multipul places. my question is can i still paint over this? i am polishing to remove the orange peel so should i have cleared it first? if you cant tell this is my first time polishing with compound, aproximatly how long should it take me?

Take a toothbrush and some dishsoap, and scrub all the traces of compund off the paint. Then, repaint over it. You've probably figured out you want it a bit thicker this time. You don't need to strip. Having paint undernieth will give you a bit more rub through protecion (except on th eplaces you have already rubbed through).

Rubbing out takes as long as it takes. There's really no good way to learn it except by experince. You will learn to be careful rubbing near edges, but only by rubbing through edges first. Rub through? Add more paint and do it again, just more carefully.

Starts to take a long time with all the waiting for the paint to dry....

Go a bit easier with the Meguiars rubbing compound. It's intended for car paint which is a whole lot tougher than Tamiya paint. It's more abrasive than say Tamiya compound. You need to get the magic moment when you have got rid of all the orange peel effect and the paint is glass smooth but you haven't rubbed through and there's still enough paint on the model to give a deep shine. It takes a bit of trial and error.Keep practising though and the results can be stunning.

you should use hobby compound and not automotive compound. Those are much "finer".
Tamiya compound cost 3$ and will last you months.

I used to put 2mm Tamiya masking tape on the hard edges of the car when first starting to rub paint out. ie. fenders, trunk rear etc.... then remove for final polish. this saved me from rubbing through these sensitive areas.
