i have a 97 gl with a stereo built to go with a 6 disc trunk mounted ( i am guessing) cd changer that it does not have. what would be the cheapest way to upgrade my stereo so that it at least plays cd's?

Is this the factory radio you're talking about???? Do you have the eatc(electronic temp control) system or regular manual knobs?? You can check places like crutchfield.com to get some kind of idea what works,, I know faceplates are made for the manual controls, not for the eatc, at least last I knew,, if you have the eatc, you can buy cd changer( for remote mount) with adapter that'll work

personally i would say screw the factory ones, they arnt worth that much and the quality is bad, i reccomend going out and spending the money on a good head unit and deffinatly get rid of the old one. Yes they are worth a lot but if you plan on keeping the car for a while it is well worth it. Then after you have the head unit you can add in a cd changer or whatever but most all of the head units come with 1 disk cd players already installed.

i've never seen a GL with electronic climate control.
I suggest getting the scoshe adapter plate and aftermarket head unit too.

Thanks for the GL info, I'm not familiar with what goes with what, then they must of still used the LX designation??? My wife had an 87 Taurus LX, had all the electronic options on it, including probably the best idea ever, the insta-clear windshield, that is unless you had to pay for a new one, lol.. sold it off a couple of years ago for parts, had 157k miles on it, original tranny too, great engine, best shifting I've had in years, none of that soft fluffy stuff, this baby was bang bang bang bang and bang, all the way thru, never a problem and I had it flushed twice, severe rusting problems which I believe were caused by poor body design, all the crap collected in the rocker areas, causing serious rusting, didn't matter I washed the cars religiously, sprayed undercarriages out, never realized the extent of the issues until the plastic cladding started falling off the cars, pretty much the same issue thru 95 model, even though body style changed somewhat, they still start showing rust in the same places, boy is this off-topic, well no it did have an excellent, once I upgraded the speakers, factory stereo w\amp.

Look at crutchfield.com to get an idea of what you're looking at, then take it from there, I know they're available out there.

I also have a question about my stereo. I have a 2000 taurus and my multi disk changer was gone when I got my car. I recently purchased a 2001 stereo with CD player from eBay. I have been told that I can make this work in my 2000 very easily by changing a few of the plugs around. Can anyone help with specific instructions?
Thanks,
Paul

Crutchfield.com has wiring adapters and faceplates. Take a look at their website and see what the parts look like.
