MSD Coil Vs. The Stock

Been talkin with ol' Bob a bit about changing the coils to MSD. Anyone else done this? What were the results? Better performance....milage? Couldnt find any data in the forum on this. Yeah....I know what MSD "says" will happen...but I want to hear from someone who has actually done it.

Anyone know the voltage differance between the factory and MSD coils?

from these two threads, one of which i posted because i had the same question, i think you will gather that the ignition system on the gp's is pretty damn good. there is a chance that the msd might be better, but you will only be able to tell at very high rpm's and if your car is moderately to heavily modded. your best bet is first to do all your other performance mods, and then consider the coils and wires.

Thanks Jimmy. Yep....I just wondered because I could get the stock coils for 40.00 each.....or the MSD for 41.00 each....chose the MSD for the money. I had to buy some new ones...mine seem to be wearing out........Will see if it makes a differance

Just go stock. GM ignition system (especially on the Grand Prix's) are hard to improve upon. Simply changing your coils to MSD wont do anything, except waste 3 dollars for all of them. Go Stock, you wont see a difference

I read through those threads and the average response seems to be that you can't improve on the stock coils unless you have a lot of mods, only then will a difference be even slightly detected.
Is this just for the 1997+ GP's or does this include the 1996 and older ones as well?
The reason I ask is because I plan to be doing numerous mods to my car, likely this summer, and if newer coils will even help get the slightest bit of performance out of my mods, I would like to swap them. As it is I intend to move the coils and shorten up the wires (less wire = less resistance) Other mods I have planned for this year include a FWI, performance chip, and maybe a Granetelli MAF sensor, then I will be thinking about some exhaust work.

GM coils only start to break down under extreme heat, or over 6,500 RPM. If you don't plan on exceeding these parameters, the MSD's will offer no performance gain regardless of year of Grand Prix.

Well.....hope I didn't blow it by going on ahead with the MSD coils......I just thought it would look nice under there and hopefully...will not be worse than the stock coils. I had to get new coils either way.......and plan on some mods later......hopefully I didnt waste my money here

it would be hard to call anything from msd a waste. let us know if they work out for you.

All I can say about the MSD coils is they sure look a hell of a lot better than the stock. It's a game of Psych when you pop open the hood. :bigthumb:

I agree Bob, and since the price was so close, I'd have bought the MSD's also. I should have mentioned that in my post. Not much (if any)performance gain on a non-modded car, but they are cool looking compared to stock for a total of $3 difference.

Yes, I agree especially with the pretty red MSD 8 or 8.5mm wires.

LOL....well....got those fine lookin' muhta's installed today....and yep....they look cool.

Got those damn blue Accel wires though.....AHHHHHH...I got it.....RED WHiTE AND BLUE theme.....and the car is white!!! LOL

Paintin' the engine cover white....thats it hehehehe
