2001 CRV buzzing while shifting

My CRV has a buzzing while shifting (shifting is normal) and seems related to RPM range of 21/2300. A mechanic claims the noise sounds like it's in the tranny case, but to me it seems further back than that. Heat shields seem tight as new on the exhaust. Years ago I had similar shifting noise in a 1985 Hondamatic which never affected anything either. Any ideas out there?
