Cruising the I-15 going north to Las Vegas Friday, my friends and I (3 total) were driving in a 2005 Ford Mustang (V6). Speed limit is 70 and we were going with the flow of traffic. We felt a slight vibration and then it went away, figuring it was from the road. About two minutes later we all here a "CLUNK SMASH" The back left wheel snapped off from the axle. Lugnuts still attached. Sending me and my friends left into a cement center divider. We hit it and spun 180* sliding backwards on the freeway, watching car watch us between the smoke and dirt cloud. We slid off just next to the freeway, on the dirt. The pictures don't show that we almost landed in a ditch that was about 10' away and 10' deep. The gas tank was slammed up and leaking gas.. My friends and I did not get a scratch on us.. We were so lucky.... That was my weekend. (And yes we still went to vegas :D)

Just from looking at that pic. It looks like the caliper seized locked. Jammed up the rear wheel and that caused the lugs nuts to snap off with the wheel but does anyone know if the new V6 stangs are posi?

That damn thing still has the dealer plate in the front. So it was like brand new. F that. You should even beable to get money from this, the stress it put on you bla bla bla, play the psychological bit. Then you can get your LS-1 or wait and get the new maro, when it comes out.....You can say this to Ford if they try to fight it http://santafemods.com/images/Smileys/AFPics/bringit.gif

Wow I am kind of shocked, it took 3 pages before everyone started bashing Xeno, but anyway how many miles did the stang have on it. I couldn't have been many with dealer tags and what not. When I bought my TA the first thing I did was take off the dealer liscense plate holder.

even if u were not hurt at all, the point is u could have been. u should be able to get somethin out of a lawsuit, even though u don't own the car and were not driving. people are also awarded settlement for being "emotionally tramatized" by the accident :naughty: . anyway, glad to see u came out ok.

V6 Mustangs don’t have an LSD it’s not even an option. It the brake had locked up the wheel would have locked up, not broken off. This is a straight up axle failure.

Not so, have you ever got stuck on snow or ice with a non posi car?. What happens?. Exactly. Now imagine cruising at 70 + MPH with that wheel not moving. Where do you think the stress point would be?

The axle should still be strong enough to take it. It’s an open diff so the force wouldn’t all be on that axle. Also this doesn’t look or sound like a lock up. If it was a lock up the car should have spun out without warning and most of the tire should still be on the wheel.
It looks and sounds like the axle broke off and the wheel was held on for a little while by the brake disc and caliper slowing down the wheel which striped the tire off of it, wall spinning out the car and then the wheel came off the rest of the way.

Damn AF for not giving my a buzzer :banghead: .
I completely disagree with you. I like how your saying the axle should have been strong enough to take pressure from traveling at 70+MPH but your theory is it wasn't strong enough to handle regular normal driving conditions :screwy: . Lets just call this one a complete disagreement and call it a day.
Also if you go back you will notice that Xeno (even though he was highly medicated most likely) noted sounds coming from the rear that stopped shortly before the accident happen. It was most likely the tire skipping from occasional lock up.

The axle snapped! First thing, get a product liability lawyer.
Next, find an independent engineering firm (look up non-destructive testing in the phone book) to do a hardness test on the axle stub that is still with the wheel. Have it checked on the outer diameter close to the break as possible, then 1/4" back from that, then 1" back. Have the break itself checked too.
Then contact the local area rep from your Ford dealer, just don't tell him that you have a lawyer if you get one. The Ford dealer will put you in touch with the rep. I have never seen an axle break like that on a street car, unless it was previously hit on the wheel and stressed.
Good luck, Bob
