Place the jack under the axle on the side that you are lifting. I put mine next to the lower suspension arm bracket.

If you have a floor jack and stands you can jack from the differential in the middle. If you have 4 stands, you can do both ends and rotate the tires while you are at it. I have 2 floor jacks and I lift one side from the frame area where it is reinforced for the suspension components. That way you can rotate one side at a time.
