83 engine swap

Alright, I'm hoping a knowledgeable bunch of people like you all can help me out. I currently own a 1983 Camaro (base model). Recent mods include removal of the cat and a new Flowmaster muffler, an Edelbrock Performer EPS manifold (2701), an Edelbrock carb (1405), and removal of much of the emissions control equipment under the hood (AIR pump, EVAP canister and hardware, etc). In a few months, I am planning on replacing the tired stock 305 with either a new or reman. 305. I have two questions that I was hoping someone could help me with. First, does anyone know a reputable dealer in new or remanufactured engines in the Evansville, IN area? and second, how much extra work would it require to remove the car's computer during the engine swap? The computer is currently not hooked up to anything, so I figured if it wouldn't be too difficult I could remove it from the car while I had the engine out of the way. Also, I was planning on using the manifold and carb, but since I am planning on getting an engine designed for non-computer controlled applications I was wondering if they would still work? Thanks in advance for your help, and let me know if you need any more information.

well the pcm in your car is inside the dash right above where your passengers feet are... now i'm wondering what you mean the pcm isn't hooked up to anything... you mean you don't have any of the sensor connections hooked up? your ses light would be on then... since you said you haven't unhooked the pcm yet... i'm not very up to date on the electronics of a carbed third gen, so i'm not sure what all the pcm actually monitors... but without it, the car prolly wouldn't start unless you completely rewire the car in a fashion that older pre-computer cars were...
if you did the rewireing, then an engine without sensors would be fine...
don't know of a engine shop anywhere around u unfortunately...

i honestly wouldn't bother putting a 305 back in it. For the price and availability go 350. You'll have to get new heads, but heck a long block 350 isn't all that much, new even, let alone used. And you're manifold should bolt right up. That manifold works from 298 - 375ish??
Locations, hmm, Indiana, in the meiddle of the cornfields there's a place called Jasper, that makes some good engines, they go by the name of Jasper Engines :D Might be worth the trip? But they also do have a network of shops that ship the engines in the Il-IN & MI area.
The PCM, obviously you're not in the 5 county area for smog sniffing, give it the boot.
Oh, and welcome to the boards!

yes dont waste your time putting a 305 back in it!! when i first pulled the 6 cyl out i dropped in a full roller 305... bitch was fast but i regreted not just getting a 350
you could pick one up for prolly the same price as your 305 and everything will bolt up... motor mounts trans etc

Alright guys, thanks for the suggestions. I will look up Jasper Engines and see what they have to offer. As far as swapping in a 350 vs another 305, what kind of difference in fuel economy can I expect between the two? Also, the carb on the car now only flows 500cfm, will that be enough for a 350? I am going to go ahead and rip out the computer, is there any chance I might be able to sell it somewhere like eBay, or is it not worth the trouble? Thanks again and thanks for the welcome to the boards!

eh, ones man trash is another one's treasure as they say.
If it's going to be a streeter with a tame cam, the carb s/b fine.
