Why is the 3rd Gen lighter?

The 85-90 models(350ci) and maybe more were about 200lbs lighter than an SS, plus with the LS1 weight difference, the third gen is even lighter. So was it build quality, different frame? Body? How is the third gen lighter or how is the 4th gen heavier?

Don't cars get lighter as the years roll on? So because of the 4th gen providing 300+hp as opposed to 220hp, they built it heavier? It still confuses me. Maybe it's not that much heavier but noticeable...damn it's another one of my hypotheical questions on AF which no one really wants to answer

thats mean.......and I can hold my own with my car... so not all thirdgen gen were bastardized into weak little cars...

fourth gens usually have a lot more options and probably were made heavier to meet safety standards. thus heavier

oh btw, f-bodies got heavier with the years... 1st gens are the lightest... why? good question, but the curb weight goes up with every generation...

A FIRST GEN IS LIGHT????? What's it's curb weight?

you would think a first gen would be the heavest because it is all metal and it has a heavy ass engine. And how much does a 3ed gen weigh? stock? like a 92 like mine?

just found these specs, not sure how accurate they are

'67 z28 3070lbs

'92 z28 3103lbs

'98 ss 3360lbs

Dave.. where did you get those specs at because they gotta be wrong.. if I remember right, I saw my Camaro's weight to be 3300.. and I thought 4th gens were close to 3800..

various f-body sites... i would trust them more than your memory to be honest...

the newer the car the heavier basically because of all of the new technology.. computers, interior, safety stuff.... multiple cup holders ..... basically because its not just a motor with a frame anymore... they pack everything into them...

yeah. If you actually would look at my car. All it is, is a frame, drivetrain, body, and seats. Thats it.

The box alone was like 50 lb the subs are light those. I am sure with the new hood. removing all the a/c stuff. removing all emissions equipment and so on. It has to be lighter.

atleast the weight is in the back now..

i need some dead bodies in the back for traction... kc wouldn't weigh enough... who wants to sacrifice themselves for my goal of traction?

i know that on my 87 iroc, the sticker inside the drivers door said that mine weighed 4080lbs. my car had no power windows,locks,mirrors,seats. only major options were a/c and t-tops. are these stickers incorrect or am i missing something?

ya i cant see a thirdgen weighing that much thats alot...my friend has a 89 GTA with all the goodies and some subs and he weighd in at 3680+- a few pounds...

is it wheel hopping or just overpowering the gear all together?

I noticed that on my IROC door aswell. That's gotta be way incorrect or is meant for something else. My pops has a 84 Caprice, which weighs about 4000lbs, there no way my IROC is that heavy.

Ya ever take the hood off these things? I kept the fiberglass hood I had on my old Camaro and forgot how much the stockers weigh when we got the new one, that was a quick reminder. That's to say nothing about the doors either. .

yep I know this all too well, just took it off and the thing is a beast of a hood. And they took all of the insulation off also. I know this is offtopic..even though I made the topic but why are there so many 87 irocs..can't I change mine to 86 or 88 to be original? :uhoh:

there are actually more 86 irocs than 87-88. i know froduction started faling off after a bit after 86 but i can't seem to find my camaro white book w/ the exact production #'s.
about the weight, someone needs to take their third gen to a dump or something and drive across the scale to find out how much it actually weighs.

The 3 gen has a single A-arm strut front suspension.
The 4 gen has a double A-arm front suspension.
The 3 gen has less glass.
The 3 gen has a small spoiler on the back.
The 4 gen has heavy an integrated wing setup.

Actually that’s wrong. The 2 gen is the heaviest F-body and the 3 gen was the lightest.

1 gen 3500 lbs.
2 gen 3700 lbs.
3 gen 3200 lbs.
4 gen 3500 lbs.

This is of course these weights for the basic V8 hard top models not fully loaded ones.

Your looking at the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, it’s how much the car weighs with 4 people and cargo in it. Were talking curb weight.

yeah, almost every 4th gen I see wrecked is because of a high speed accident...

eventually most cars end in a yark so the argument has no point. If there are more thirdgens than fourth gens its because thirdgens are older.......this topic will probably come up again after the 5th gens are out for a while and more 4th gens get some age on them lol

just an observation though.
