Well, here's the new problem. The truck runs rough at idle and it's running rich. No numbers, (cause I don't know how to check it) and it's sucking up gas like crazy. It's got plenty of power and runs ok when your on the gas, but idles rough. It surges, almost like it's searching. When you first start it you get a little white smoke, then it's ok. And just today after putting gas last night, the car smells like gas. I've been doing a little research from previous threads and read about a cpi "spider" that goes bad in these trucks. The mechanic also said it could be this. But he's quoting me over 600. to fix it. I don't know what the actual name of the part is, where to get it or the cost. Anyone have an idea?

As an aside, Thank you guys for all the info. You're GREAT!!!

do you have a "service engine soon" light on? if so parts stores like Autozone will read the code for you for free. Autozone even gave me the tool to read the codes manualy and showed me how to use it. get all codes a post them here.

if your mechanic quoted $600 that would have to be a full CPI replacement, basicly the entire fuel injection system. might be something simpler.

There is no "service engine" light on. Wouldn't that mean there are no codes? If there still might be, could I still go to auto zone and ask them? Thanks!

yes, there are both "hard codes" that turn the ses light on full time untile cleared and "intermintent codes" that only turn the light on when occuring and turn it off when the problem stops. The intermitent codes are stored too. get it checked.
