Well that is the question.

When buying a used car should you test drive or not? I think so, so you can find out whats really wrong with the car, b/c there usually is something wrong. especially when you aren't buying from a dealership. So what do you guys think?

HAHA! i got the first post:flipa:

That's one of the "DUH"s :D

Obviously you need to test drive the car before buying, even when buying a brand new car.

What if you're buying a car online? Or from another state?

wow i dint even think about that one. Good question. Well if its not a too far away state and the car is well worth it then maybe. As for online, not me, i'll buy cd's and shit like that but not cars. thats a little too iffy.

well if you're buying a new car online then just test drive a new one at the dealership and it'll be the same

Driving a car at one dealership will give you the general feel for a particular brand. BUT, you must drive the car you are planning on buying. They are not all the same. Buying something like a car sight unseen and/or undriven is a bad bad idea and you will get burned.

Even new cars are not exactly the same. They are more likely to be similar. For the amount of money being spent, I'd never buy one without first taking out for a spin.

Of course you want to have a test drive.

All the cars i've brought from dealers I've taken straight to my own repair garage to have them checked over. If they find anything i will tell the dealer that it needs to be done.

I'd then take the car out for 3-4 hous. Driving in town and on the highway to get a feel for it.

I'd compare it with any other car i was looking at and do the same thing.

When i have decided what to buy, i'd ask the dealer to have the car for the rest of the day and night and bring it back the next day.

I'm a real fussy bastard when buying a car and when i've got it home i'd go over the whole car and make sure everything works inside as well as outside.
Then i'd take it back the next day....talk things over and buy it.

I don't think dealerships around here would let you take a car over night

Some of them are not that keen on the idea...but they keep your old car and get you to almost sign your live away.
If you are really keen on the car they are pretty good about it.

I have always wanted to ask the dealer to let me take the care home before i buy it. Do you have to fight with them to get them do agree or are they used to that request?

Depends on a lot of things. Who you are and what kind of car it is. I've had Cadillac dealers give me the car to use overnight, but I couldn't get an Accord without a salesman in the car. It might have helped I drove in the Cadillac dealership with the Spyder, but I had the Shadow for the Accord

I'd say obviously u gotta test drive it. Here is one tip I have for everyone though especially when looking at n e type of used sports car. When you are driving it and the car salesman is with you lay into that car anyway!!! I think people get too scared to with the salesman in the car with you but forget that, you are obviously paying all this cash for car that can perform and also if you are buying this car used I'm sure the person b4 you got on it! A lot of prolems you won't here unless you push the car. If the salesman says anything too you explian yourself if he still has a problem then don't buy the car.
I had this happen to me and I bitched to the manager and he said I was perfectly within my right and he let me take the car all day w/o the lame salesman.

ya gotta test drive it.. and even if you are buyin a used one far away, still fly there drive it, if you get there and find something wrong, you'll be glad you did and be well worth not buying it without testin

Personally, I wouldn't.

Buying a new or used car I would take it out for a test drive, no question; though with the used car I would probably take it to my mechanic to look it over.

and watch their reaction, if they are pushing a lemon on ya you'll know..
if not then away you go ...
