1st gear and none to go

Hey, I've got a 3.0 acclaim with a 4 speed automatic with over drive.
My problem is this: the car always starts and shifts fine, but if u drive it for any amount of time (30+ min) at some point (mabey when coasting to drop speed?) it will shift hard from second to first, start making a slight grinding sound/feeling and then wont shift back up at all. If i let it sit over night it seems to fix itself but always seems to come back at the worst times. ive changed the transmition fluid and filter and still no love.
I had already thout about trying to put a 5 speed in it, but dont know how fesible this is. Also, in my totaly uninformed opinion, the way the intake and everything is set up on this car would make it a good candadit for turbocharging. has anybody turboed this car and with what outcome? any comments greatly apriciated.
