Okay about 1 month ago my car started to surge every once and awhile.

I just put it off intill yesterday when the car really started to act up.

My service engine light is on every once and while...i get code 23 its like this: When the light is on its does this:

flash flash...flashflashflash.......flash flash

I was told today its the sensor in the airbox right under the airfilter.

This car is 1993 oldsmobile cutlass supreme s 3.1 litre

For code 23 i get 4 different items in the obd code book

I searched and read about serging problems on here but mine is alittle different. Car will start right now drive down the road but i'll only get 2 miles then the car will die....after it dies the first time its all hell breaks lose...you can wait there awhile before the car will start...Also sometimes if you have the gas matted to the floor while turning it over sometimes helps....got to keep it reved up cause if you don't the engine eill die sometimes.

let me know guys thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to AF!

The Haynes manual that I have indicates that code 23 is the intake air temp sensor located in the air cleaner assembly. This will cause the car to run lean or rich depending on the temp sent to the computer so that may be a part of your problem. I would replace it first. If the car still stalls you may need to change the crank position sensor as that will cause stalling similar to what you describe. Good Luck!

Finally i found a site that might beable to help...lol...thanks

So ya that sensor in the airbox is that one i was talking about...umm i guess i could get that sensor from junkyard...and off any 3.1 right?....would make sense.

I read on here people pretty much all have the same problems....like my tranny won't go into gear intill i wait for it to warm up and 4 clunks later every morning....lol

Where is this crank sensor????

I would get a new one not one from a junk yard because you may be wasting your money. A new sensor is the best thing. The crank sensor is located on the block near the bell housing to the transmission. I am not sure which side. Unfortunately on the 3.1 you will need a scan tool to replace it because you will have to do a case learn procedure which can't be done without it.

Well i got 3 different sensors and tried them all and none worked. 2 on throttle body and one in the airbox. So the problem is coming from somewhere else. This crank sensor is on the front or back of the motor?

I got 3 sensors per sensor so total 9 sensors
coil pack
maf sensor

all for $20.00 canadian he he he

What about the cam position sensor and the ignition module? Crank position sensor should be on the back of the engine next to the transmission housing but it is part of the engine.

Code 45 has to do with the evaporative emissions system specifically the charcoal canister. Should be located inside the fenderwell on the drivers side but it could be anywhere. You may have gotten some gas into the canister due to the car not running correctly. You may have to replace it with another one. Of course the wrecking yard is you friend.

I would try the MAF sensor located between the filter and the intake. That was the problem with my cutlass and I too had the same symptoms you describe. If it were the crank sensor I don't beleive it would even start. The ignition module or coil pack could cause this as well.

check your fuel system, pressure, regulator, filter... course you need a fuel pressure tester... but its possible your pump is on its way, or your fuel pressure regulator is either stuck open or the diaphram is torn.. whatever, thats my suggestions

okay well the car is at gm because i have changed more sensors then i can count...the reason they say is because the transmission is screwed.

when reving engine up transmission clunks

when car is cold in the morning car doesn't go into gear for atleast 1 min have to put in park and try again...

what do you guys think of this bull....?
