Well, tomorrow after work Mike and I are going to take advantage of our spring like (40+ degree) weather up here in MN and we are going to start taking the engine out. All/most of the bitch work (unplugging stuff, radiator, battery, draining fluids, t case, etc) will get done tomorrow after I get done with work. He has enough for the rebuild kit, but we need to buy an engine jack/stand first. Our plan is to take it out, get it disassembled, take a micrometer to everything, clean everything, then see where we're at with what we need to buy. We're aiming for a spring break start up, so we've got time, but I really hope this goes smoothly. Heres what we're looking at:
-Shit is leaking from EVERYWHERE on that stupid engine
-Bad knock
-135, 130, 130, and 130 for compression
-Mix and matched injectors (see below)
-F'd up exhaust mani (atleast 3 cracks)
-Goofy stripe on the timing belt
So yeah, the injector situation. I dont know much about them, but you know where the they plug in on top of the injectors? Well, following the wire to the injector, first you meet a red thing, I would assume a connector. After than I think is the injector itself right? Well, on the two in the middle (cyl 2 and 3) the injector thing where the wires plug into is black, on the outsides (cyl 1 and 4) the place the wires plug into is blue! What the fuck is up with that ? Is this normal or did the previous owner give us an interesting situation to deal with?

Anyway, wish us luck tomorrow, I know we're going to need it. If I remember the Haynes manual right, we do the bitch work stated above, take out the axles (and in our case T-case), and then we just have to drop the tranny/engine mounts and pull the bastard. Hopefully next week we can get the axles out and then its just a matter of time until we get the $$$ to get the engine jack and stand, then I get something to take my stress out on! When I get pissed off, I like to do something that keeps my hands and mind busy and lately I have been pissed off a lot. Girls are fucking stupid. I'll be back tomorrow to report progress on Project: POS. Thanks guys...

Sounds like you have a helluva project on your hands. Great learning experience, and you will have a nice DSM afterward to show for it. Good luck. :smokin:

Hey, thats a great idea. I will do a complete writeup, from popping the hood to pulling the engine, taking apart the engine and putting it back together, then putting it back in. I'll try to take as many pictures as I can, especially of the engine disassembly and reassembly.

Thanks for the support guys, I appreciate it. :)

Any ideas on the injectors? Are there two different kinds in there or are they supposed to be two different colors?

Good Luck man!

"Project POS" that just made me crack up! LOL

So whats up with the I hate girls attitude...whta is going on with that one girl you talked about around X-mas time?

I dont know man, everything was going great. She was even the one to suggested that we hang out and watch a movie together (parents wouldnt let her) and invited me to a new years eve party with her. Nothing weird happened there, nothing that hadnt happened already, and she just quit talking to me. She stopped meeting me after class and blocked me from MSN and wont even look me in the eye when we pass in the halls. I dont know what happened, but whatever. Then my two best friends are always hanging out with their new girlfriends from out of town. Now that I think about it, those two bastards have fuckin ditched me the past 3 saturdays! They ditched me for dates tonight and two Saturdays ago, and last Saturday they were supposed to come see me sing for our show choir's fund rasier with them and did something else instead. Oh well, they should have learned that long distance doesnt work and we'll see where I am when they break up. So I am sitting here refreshing the AF page every 5 minutes in hopes that theres a new thread or post to respond to, so if you guys have noticed that I have basically been living here, thats why. So yeah, thats my "fuck girls" story, sorry for the rant guys.

Anyway, thanks you guys for not leaving me alone on saturday nights ;).

Dont worry Thor, we all love you! Dude the same thing happened with me and my girl (ex-now - went out for a year and half). One day she told me that someone had told her that someone had stopped by her work and just said "Hi". After that I didnt recieve a call from her and she wouldnt talk to me. But when I did finally speak to her, like a month later, she said that it wasnt that incident that broke us up, and she went on with the usual crap upon break-up....the funny thing is she was crying, so it all didnt make sense.

But atleast you have a car to work on. I sold my eclipse and now I get so bored.

But dont worry you will get over her.

Anyways back to the thread - LOL - A writeup would be so awesome. Because if I get another DSM (turbo, ofcourse) I would want to rebuild it! I want to get a mustang, but I saw a white GST (maybe GSX) and it looked so sick and it made me feel so sad. It had the FMIC going too...DAMN!

You can come watch me and my friend pull out the engine in the gsx. We are doing it at his house in Temecula.

hey thor are you guys going to paint the car? why have a pretty engine with an ugly car

Thor06
01-29-2006, 06:01 PM
 Yes the car will get painted eventually. Theres a shit-ton of body work we need to do first though.

Well, the first day of Project: POS has gone with out a hitch, knock on wood. We got about 2.5 hours of work done, but with us both going I think we did pretty good. It was chilly, but warm enough to work on it. Mike is really impatient and thats starting to and will continue to hinder us. He is really excited to get the engine out, but to get evrerything back on the car in due time, we need to label connectors, bolts, etc and he hasnt been. Oh well, nothing way too important has been lost yet, nothing we cant snag off a car in a junk yard or hardware store. Anyway, we got the filter, MAF, intake, BOV, UICP, LICP, fans, and raditator off today. Heres all the parts we took off sitting by our tools.

Heres the engine before:

And after:
http://x4.putfile.com/1/2818055883.jpg (http://www.putfile.com)
So far we have already learned a lot. We found a couple more leaks or atleast where they they the others are originating. I am also learning what all the vac lines and wires are going to. I am going to "hack" the MAF unless someone strongly warns me against it and preparations for the bov mod will happen this week. We are going to have 20's atleast and into the 30's again all next week so hopefully we can get all the bitch work done before next weekend, then the T case and axles out next weekend, then the weekend after that we can pull the engine. I will start the writeup tonight. Things are looking good!

Time for questions...
-There were two hoses coming out of the bottom of the radiator with bolts shoved in them. WTF are the hoses for? Is it supposed to be like that? Heres a pic...
http://x4.putfile.com/1/2818050037.jpg (http://www.putfile.com)
-If we take out the drive axles, cant the front wheels still be bolted on and the car lowered onto them?
-Any insight on the aforementioned injector situation?

Thanks guys.

Ok, we worked on the car some more today, heres an update.

We skipped 3rd and 4th hour (4 period day) from school and went to Mikes to work on his car. We tried to take off the driveaxle, but we dont have a big enough socket. So instead, we unplugged a few more sensors, the shift cables, and the throttle cable. We took the fuel lines off as well, and drained the tranny fluid, t case fluid, and engine oil. Basically, if I am thinking correctly (and I may not be, it was freakin cold and my brain may not have all the way thawed yet) all we have to do is finish taking off the DP, do the t-case, remove the drive axles, and then we are ready to pull the bitch. The writeup is coming along, I think I will post two (if thats ok with our mods) one for pulling/putting back in, and another for taking apart and rebuilding the engine. I am going to work on it Thursday and Friday whether Mike is there or not, and hopefully on Saturday the engine will find its way out. We found a use for Mikes old DP! There was a bolt on the cross member under the engine that was pretty stuck. Neither breaker bar and hammer or impact wrench could get it to loosen. Well, I put the end of the breaker bar into one end of the old DP and used it as extra leverage. The bolt came right out :D. I was kinda excited about that, now we have an idea for that driveaxle bolt that I bet is pretty fuckin stuck. Anyway, now for the questions:

- Any idea what size the nut holding the driveaxle to the hub assembly (or whatever you call it) is?
- Is there any special way to hook the engine puller to the engine?

Thanks guys.

I think those lines from the Rad. are for just draining it. I may be wrong; we just took the cap off of those and fluid just came out.

I can't remember the exact size. 30mm ish. Maybe a tad smaller. Just make sure your chain is clear from everything when you pull, and take it slow. This is usually when you break things.

I'll check tomorrow on the size. I broke a breaker bar (1/2") trying to get that nut off my old accord. (that was with a pipe to extend it to about five feet long) I also couldn't get the one off my talon until i bought a better impact (660 ft lbs!!!). How high does the torque go on your impact? You may need to buy a new one.

Thor06
02-01-2006, 07:43 PM
Ok. We used Mikes old DP to get enough torque to loosen a stuck bolt on a crossmember on the bottom of the engine bay and thats what we figured we would have to do for this too. I hope it doesnt break like yours did, that sucks. We got a 30mm and it was a hair too small so I took it back and got a 1 1/4 and it fit good. It might be a 32mm, but they are really close. We're going to try it tomorrow, I'll post back on how it went.

Man haven't you guys ever heard of a garage?

haha just kidding. I'm about to rip the engine out of this new gsx on saturday, once I pick it up ;)

It takes us about an hour to pull a mustang engine, so i'm interested to see how long it takes us to pull a 4g63

Thor06

Nope, we dont have garages up here, just teepees and log cabins ;).

Mike doesnt have a garage so we are kinda boned. It died and we towed it to his house, couldnt get it running, and there isnt anywhere around his house that we could take it to. So we just have to buck up and do it outside in the snow and cold. Whats really interesting is that his driveway is dirt, not paved, so its not even. It gets kinda interesting trying to jack it up and gets even more interesting working underneath it. Once we get it up on jackstands we definately push it from the front, back, and sides 3-4 times each to make sure its solid. In the summer we have a 2x10 that we lay accross under the car and put the jackstands on, but the ice and ground are hard enough so we dont have to do that in the winter. When we have to be under the car we are working on we take it to my house (paved driveway) but thats not an option so we have to get creative ;).

So far, I have put in about 5 hours and Mike has put in maybe 3. He watches me a lot and hands me wrenches or something. It used to bother him that I did most of the work, but he doesnt realize that I have read the Haynes manual 3 times straight through (exaggerating, but it seems like it sometimes) and I spend a LOT of time on here and DSM tuners just reading.

An hour? Bastards, all of you Mustang guys, bastards ;).
