I'd like to just change the compressor clutch and not the whole compressor. It's a 1996 cherokee 4.0. I can't find a clutch alone in a parts store, but if this change can performed I'll get a clutch at a junkyard. Can anyone offer some advise?

I had the same thing happen this summer with my '98 cherokee. I took it to a repair guy and he had to order the clutch from jeep. I think the bearing failed on the clutch. It was growling and moaning something fierce. We (the mechanic and I) both agreed that a "factory" charge on the A/C system that didn't leak justified the cost of changing the clutch vs. putting in a whole new compressor. He had nothing but horror stories about installing a new clutch/compressor and them never holding a charge. With labor I think it was less than $300. I didn't have the tools to change it nor the will to learn about A/C clutch setup.

Mine did too, but I ordered a replacement compressor with clutch which made it easy. Make sure you replace the O-rings. With a gage kit and r-134a, it was more than 500 bucks, but the orginal compressor was 8 years old, so I thought a replacement was a better idea. This is the "do-it-yourself" way.

Thanks y'all. The jeep I'm talkink about has over 200,000 miles on it. If I found a good used compressor and maybe some new o rings, how much do you think it would cost to get it charged?

You can buy r134a at Kragen's for 10 bucks a can. You need 2 and half.
The gage is a good idea though...about 40 bucks for that. I ordered my compessor on the internet and got the o-rings for a couple of bucks at the local parts store, make sure they are silicone. You can get the r134 with oil or leak stop in it.
