Does anyone know if there are any studies or research on whether or not fuel injector cleaner works or not? I have heard both yes and no. Does anyone use it? Any comments would be appreciated...

Do not under any circumstance take my words for truth but the general consenus I have read about is that it's mostly ineffective at best and damaging at worst. The fuel injectors ports are pretty small and would seem to be easily clogged but you have to remember that you have fuel at 45-60 psi being shot out hundreds or thousands of times a minute. Not much chance for clogging to occur. The two main reasons for fuel injector clogging I have heard about are nasty, low grade fuel and improper intake valve seal, resulting in carbon from the cylinder being blown into the intake and thus the fuel injector.
To address the first issue, bad fuel, try running premium if you aren't already. Many grades of premium gas come with detergents in them to help clean the fuel system.
If the intake valve is letting carbon back into the intake, the valve lash may be improperly adjusted or the valve may be damaged.
