I have been having a problem in my 1991 Honda civic for the past 3 months. It won’t start when I drive to my work place and the vehicle sits in the hot sun and when I try to start in the lunch time to drive back, it won’t start. I checked with a mechanic he says it is a fuel pump problem. My battery, alternator, starter and ignition timing are fine and I did a engine tune up also. I don know if he is right that the FUEL PUMP is the problem. I have a doubt that MAIN RELAY might be the problem also. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between FUEL PUMP AND MAIN RELAY. I read in an article that HONDA CIVIC has this fuel injection or main relay problem. I would be grateful if anyone can clarify my doubt.
I would appreciate if Anyone can let me know the price of a Fuel Pump for my 1991 Honda Civic. Is it better to purchase from a dealer or please let me know which will be cheap and best quality

well the fuel pump would be alot more money from a dealer than a local store like pep-boys or something, the dealer would have the honda part while the store would only have an aftermarket piece, but should work just as fine.
they should run ya about $145

I'd bet $$$ it's the main relay. In talking with our 'crew mechanic' (who just happens to be the head mechanic at our local Honda dealer) this is a common problem among older Honda's - like ours. Instead of spending the $$$ on a new relay he explained that you can take the relay apart & resolder the connections (what they usually do at the dealer). Due to the changes in weather, over time, the connections become brittle & don't connect as well - or at all.
I've seen a bunch of posts about people having the same, or similar problem so I thought I'd add my $.02. Hope this helps :)
