Turn Signal Flasher

I need to replace the turn signal flasher on my 2002 2-dr Alero. I've looked everywhere and cannot find it (under the hood, driver's side and passenger side panels). I called a dealer and they said it was behind the hazard light button, but when I looked back there it didn't seem like there was a place for it.
Does anyone know where this is? The dealer wants to charge me $50 just for the installation and I want to avoid this if possible.
Thanks!

What you have to do is remove the entire hazard warning switch. The entire assembly contains the hazard control and the flasher control. To gain access you need to remove the instrument bezel that sits around your dash gauges. That will give access to remove the hazard warning switch. Just unplug the wiring harness, pull out the switch and replace. There was/is a recall on that part. Depending on which factory your car was made at, it might be covered. Mine was not covered. Made at wrong factory the recall was called aganist. Hope this helps.

My VIN was not covered under the recall either, but I wrote to GM citing the TSB and Recall notices. They reimbursed the $26 I paid for the flasher at the dealer.

jrozanc,
I got my trim panel off and unplugged the wire harness, but the hazard flasher assembly won't come out. What's the trick to getting it out? :banghead:

If I remember correctly there are 2 plastic clips that snap and hold the switch into the dashboard. You have to use your thumb and fore finger to pinch them together and push/pull (?) it out...
Hope this helps...

I'm sorry, I meant to say that I got the instrument bezel off, how do I get the trim off to push in the pins that hold in the switch?

You shouldn't have to remove any more trim. The switch should pull out from the back. There is a little plastic ring that comes off on the front. I believe that is for cosmetic purposes only...

I took off the front trim ring around the emergency flasher, but the switch won't pull out from the back. Any other ideas would be appreciated.:banghead:

In April 2006, Oldsmobile (GM) wrote to Alero owners advising that they were aware of this turn signal/hazard watrning flasher problem and may be prepared to pay for this work to be rectified.
If the problem arises within 10 years of the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, or 150,000 miles, they will consider paying for the work.
Why don't you visit your GM dealer and ask them to look at the problem for you. Or, you can call 1-800-630-6537. It's worth a try, good luck! Have your VIN number when you speak or call them.

I dont beleve that it has to do with where it was made but more to do with when it was made. the 2000-2004 years got the recall, but the 99 did not. Go fig. Just my two cents.
