Blower resistor

Hi guys, you've always nailed my problems in the past, so I am back. Wish I was rich so I could reward you all :-)

My passenger compartment fan switch no longer works on fan speeds 1 to 4 (used to, and slowly they all died) but works on speed 5. From other posts, I have narrowed it to the blower resistor, but can't seem to find a good article on repairing or replacing it. Anyone have such a thing? Should I just go to Pontiac? I'm not the best auto tech, but I have replaced things like the thermostat and coolant temp sensor, tranny filter, etc.

Up under dash on passenger side- 3 5.5 mm screws- need a swivel joint 1/4 socket- pull only the front screw out- leave the back two loose- the block is slotted for ease of service- unplug the 5 wire connector- the purple and black wire feed the blower motor- and have to be unplugged there- I do them in the parking lot for $40- part cost me usually $24

I got my blower motor resistor on E-Bay.

Also, while you're working on the blower fan it might be worth it to put in the cabin air filter if your GP doesn't already have one. I don't know when they started using them, but my 97 GP didn't have one and our 99 Regal GS did. I just went to NAPA and asked for one that fit the 99 GS and it fits right in the slot in my 97 GP.

To put in the filter you'll need to take off the wiper arms and then the plastic cowl shield. On the cars that do have the filter, the cowl shield is two-piece so you don't have to take off the wiper arms.

I've had the blower motor out of both cars and it's amazing how much cleaner the blower housing and ducts are in comparison.
