bad smell

okay so m y dad drives a 2004 explorer with 4.0 fexlfuel anyway i been keeping it up getting the regualr serivces done. anyway when he bought the car i was suprized with the power it had. any how when i get on the highway and i get on the gas i mean kick the gas and get on it the car has a real bad burning smell is this something i need to have looked at or is it normall for these cars?

normaly about 5,000 rpm for about 10 seconds never kicks red line
