Ok all here's the next item in my queue.

I'll post some stuff I don't normally show you guys. Here's the reference pic:

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg1.jpg

He said he wanted it to be a toon with polished BRMs so I put out a call for some good BRM reference and a dude on a vw forum sent me a pretty good shot. I drop his BRM pic in photoshop and I made a quick and nasty chop just for feel.

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg2.jpg

Then I printed out my reference and sat down to watch the Arizona vs Arizona State B-Ball game and sketch.

Now...I'm about to show you what I start with. please understand that if you laugh my tender feelings will be hurt, but I will get over it, and more than likely seek revenge.

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg3.jpg

As you can see it appears as though I eat peanutbutter and Crack sandwiches, but it's...actually a good base. It has character and form and many times I get a feel for what can be and this one grabbed me so...

I head to my light table and get a clean piece of paper and transfer the image.

Good times! I'm seein some stuff I dig and some stuff I don't but I'm really just refining and kinda thinking out loud. Arizona is winning now after a slow start so I'm feelin pretty good.

I take my second sketch and then tape a fresh piece of paper to it and do another one on my light table.

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg5.jpg

Now I'm feelin pretty good. I know where I can go and though it's still really really rough I can start making notes. As you can see I haven't decided on reflections yet. I'm laying in interesting shapes and trying to let the car draw itself.

My next step is to make sure the person I'm doin this for is cool with it, and then I'm going to do a couple other things.

The reference picture was at a park in Oklahoma a co-worker knows...she's from that town so I want to toon in a background at some point. I also want to find another Ghia pic from a similar angle and borrow some nicer reflections. My reference for this one is a little dark so I might mix in some funky stuff cause that's how I get down.

I know this is a little long winded but we see so much finished stuff and I'm a strong believer in learning through sketching and this is just a sketch back so to speak.

I will transfer this image maybe 2 more times just to clean up every line and define every object clearly. I'll do one transfer at the current size and the second one will be blown up about 115%. That will give me more room for detailed lines and shapes that I will redraw in Illustrator.

if this annoys you stop looking.

loving the front rim with the profile of the tyre lem, should look tight ,the ghia,s lend them selves well to toons as they are stubby and short ,look forward to more

Thanks for the "insider" peeks at a project, interesting how
much light table time you put in at the start.

Nice "toony" proportions to the Ghia.

it's not really a lot of time. I just grab a new sheet and stay loose. After tonight I should have it dialed in.

I could erase more but I tend to lose my flow when I do that.

Lemorris, I think you had a thread some where way back on how you use the light table and I think you discribed how we can make one. You remember that.

Anyway that is tight as always. I look forward to seeing it in color.
I been working on my channels, made the mistake of trying to use too many colors for one car body. I notice Jeri uses I think at most 3 or two colors for the body.

i only use 2-3 colours for the body aswell mainly 2 ,the third being white sometimes to smooth the base colour sometimes in big areas

Jeri is designing for shirts so she has a limited pallet. You can use as many as you want and you can apply the same methodology to layers, but just like working with pencils or any other medium more can be too much.

At this stage I'm not even thinking about color. I know that if a piece can't stand on it's own in black and white then it won't be strong in color. That's somethin I picked up from logo design and I apply it everywhere.

The lineart base in this case is the container that will hold my color. If it's not solid...even in toon form, my drawing will suffer.

shh....that's another big secret.

ok...took a night off but back on it tonight.

I retransfered the last one and came up to this:

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg6.jpg

It felt a little closer to where it wanted to be I think. Still rough but I can see the car now. Only took 6 tries lol....anyway I had to do another one.

I enlarged the last on then transfered it again.

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg7.jpg

I was able to find some of the detail I was after and my familiarity with the drawing at this point allowed me to stylize quite a bit more. After drawing it 7 times it was like an old friend...an annoying one that you wish would get the hell off your light table, but a friend nonetheless.

Here's a detail on the front wheel.

http://www.58vw.com/af/rg8.jpg

Next this gets dropped into Illustrator as a template layer and I redraw the whole thing using the pen tool.

If I was going to ink this by hand I would transfer it one more time to some Paper for Pens (Borden and Riley I like) and then ink it.

Hehehehe Amazing!

Theses wheels are great, and the greatest is that here i learn the name of theses rims. I've never saw one of theses here in Brazil.
This hood is a challenge...

You talking about your wish to get the drawing away from your light table remembered me of my drawing class at the college, hahahaha, i never hated so much one drawing...That damm A2 giant format drawing. hehehe

Great, amazing. Keep us update.
Bye.

Nice work on the background.
Not too much detailing, but sets a "country-side" scene.
