Question for Computer chip

I am going to get a "digital horsepower" reprogrammed replacement pcm for my 2002 gt. I am also going to put on exhaust. Would it matter wich one goes on first? Like if I put exhaust on after the chip will it affect the chip in any way? thanks

It is your choice. You can do either one first but I'd do the exhaust first. Even if you put the DHP PCM first it will not pose any problems. The DHP PCM is programmed to take advantage of exhaust mods, etc.

Ok, well I am going to put the chip in first then. Just because I get the chip in a few days and exhaust in a few weeks. Also, how do I go about putting it in? and doesnt the dealership have to perform something on the car to program it? Do I put the chip in then go to the dealership right away or do it at the dealership? thanks.

You can DIY the new PCM and save money. Before installing disconnect battery negative first. Just dis-assemble the air box where it is located, remove electrical connectors and remove it. After replacement don't forget to re-connect battery.

Replacement of a PCM requires a crank variation learn procedure (case learn) at the dealer on a Tech II machine. However, note that if you decide to replace it the engine should start right up so you can get there. DHP programs in the standard crank angles but it is betting to have the case learn done on your car to help prevent false misfires. I had one case learn done free by the dealer and on another they charged $60 for shop and diagnostic machine time.

The other option is to have the dealer install the PCM and do the case learn. But I'd get an idea of how much they are going to charge first (quote).

Well I can install it myself. So I have to have the case learn done no matter what right?

Technically the case learn should done but the truth of the matter is you can probably get away without it. I've done it before. After you install the PCM see how it runs and make sure there are no misfires or SES light with a DTC error code indicating that a case learn must be done or any crank position sensor error. Good luck!

Ok. I just put the chip in and everything seems fine. It takes a little longer to start though. I w turn over for about 2 seconds and then fires right up. Is that normal? There are no SES or code lights on.

Good job! I'd recommend runnng it for a while. The PCM needs to learn and it may take a few drive cycles. After that if there is still about 2 secs worth of cranking necessary before starting then I would get the case learn done. The case learn programs crank position angles into the PCM. The CKPS establishes the ignition timing of the engine. Good luck!

ok. after a few starts its fine. It starts up right away now. I really dont feel that much of a difference in Horsepower though. thanks

Yeah, that has been a big debate concerning whether the GT with normally aspirated Series II 3800 will really benefit from a PCM mod alone. Maybe with the exhaust mods it will feel better. You do know that the aftermarket PCMs require that you run premium gas? Also, you might consider a CAI/FWI air intake mod to better take advantage of the DHP PCM.

Now on GTPs a PCM mod makes a difference because we are able to take advantage of the modified timing/advance and going to smaller supercharger pulley sizes so the power increase and feel is more dramatic.

yeah, well I currently have an intake on it. I used to have an intake that I bought on ebay that was just an elbow tube that hooked on a k&N air cone filter. But I got rid of that and I just got an elbow from lowes and a fram air hog cone filter. I took out the stock air box and all that crap. Isnt the only difference in an "intake" and "cold air intake" is that the "Cold air intake" guards the engine heat? Also would there be a real big difference in just an "intake" and "cold air intake" Also in a couple weeks I am going to take out the resonator and ubend, and put in flowmaster 2 chamberd mufflers so Hopefully that will help.

Do you know where I can find out what stock grand prixs run? Just so I can see. thanks

All the CAI does is draw cooler air from outside of the engine from under the fenderwell area and from the high pressure area behind the driver's side headlight.

The 1/4 and 0 - 60 mph specs for a '97 - '03 GP GT vary. On average stock I've seen published times of 1/4 in 16.0 secs and 0 - 60 mph in 7.8 - 8.0 secs.

Good luck on the mods.
