By Far The Dumbest Sob!!!!!

Alright, be prepared to hear one of the stupidest things that a do-it yourselfer has admitted to on this forum. I got a ticket for a window tint violation and I decided that I was going to take it off myself and......... Well, to make the story short and sweet. I read on the internet that using a scotch-brite pad on the glue that was left on window after the film was removed would take it right off. Well, it took the glue off alright..... Along with leaving hundreds of little scratches on my windows. So my question to you all is how or is their a way that I can get these scratches out of my glass? Ohhh.... and FYI to all of you 2004 sedan owners out there..... The small little piece of OEM glass on your rear doors costs $1084! So don't mess it up! I guess the glass makers believe that that window is the first to get broken out someone is trying to steal your car so they raise the price on them so the insurance companies have to pay... I hope someone has a answer for me..... I know this is a little off the wall for this forum. Thanks in advance.

fingernail polish remover easily removes tint glue w/o damaging the window.. guess its too late for that one though

YOu should have just paid the ticket unless it was obstructed vision then its two points...i have two window tint and two obstructed...i found out the hard way obstructed was points :-/

It wasn't a ticket. It was only a repair order and the sheriff told me that he was going to stop by the house and check and see if it was done in the 5 days that I had to fix it. Well, it just so happens that it was on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and no tint shops were open, so it was do it yourself or $500 fine.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You did some research before you made your mistake, and the info you got was bogus. Your glass is probably coated, and that's where the scratches came from. They make a glass polish that may get them out. I can't believe the price on that piece of glass you mentioned. Doesn't surprise me though.

JUST A THOUGHT....
I used to build model cars and if I scratched the windows (plastic, this is why I'm not sure if it will work) I would treat it the same way I did a body panel, sanding it out with a 2000 grit wet sand paper then moving up to a polish like richtazz mentioned. Before trying the sand paper I would try just the polish, I would only use the sand paper if the polish wasn't doing the job. You could probably find the polish at a glass and mirror store, I have a feeling nothing a hardware store wouldn't carry something that fine.

Rubbing alcohol will also take the glue off,maybe cheaper than finger nail polish if you need lots. I think I would be going back to the Tint shop where you got it done and saying wtf. laws very all over I know but if they are tinting car windows in your state it must be legal. On this side of the border they are only allowed to go so dark on the drivers door window and front passenger window, in the back you can have limo black if you wish. The tint shop should know the laws in your state and should have told you. Or maybe Sherriff Roscoe P. Coaltrane did not know what he was talking about. That happened up here ,my buddy took it to court ,the judge went outside sat in car and threw the charges out. Good Luck with the scatches.

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread...
But come on buddy, can you sit there and honestly tell yourself (you don't have to tell us) you are perfect and you have absolutely never had a moment where you did something then thought "hmmmm that was dumb". We all have our moments, we all make mistakes, even professional car builders make mistakes.
There is no such thing as stupidity, we're all just learning!

Now, back to the task at hand, helping poor BLKCOMPG with his windows

Muff34 has a point, up here in Canada most shops won't tint darker than the law will allow them, if you want darker you have to do it yourself (not saying no shop will do it) My windows are practically black all around with the exception of the windsheild and I have yet to have any issues with the law. If you haven't already taken all the tint off, maybe you should look into what the law exactly is. I know ours doesn't specifically state a percentage, so what is and isn't legal can be easily faught in court.

As for getting the glue off, I use a product called Goo Gone to get rid of any residue from stickers. I got mine at Canadian Tire, so you should be able to find it at most hardware stores. Works for me on fabrics and plastics, don't see why it wouldn't work on glass

Those of you in Ontario that don't believe me about the tint laws, yes I've been called on it several times, go to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Statutes/English/90h08_e.htm) and using the Find feature of your browser look for "%" or "tint"...nothing comes up. All it says regarding window coverings is that it can't abstruct your view.

In what city/state was your ticket, if you don't mind me asking.

I find it endlessly amusing that shops can tint your windows dark, but then cops fine you for it. Where's the legislation?

Yeah, this one is amusing Lynn. Getting flamed is one thing but flaming yourself is another. Oh well! :dunno:

i know they make a chemical that gets scratches out of eyeglasses, and there is also a polish for deeper scratches. i agree, you should try to find out if the shop did the tint darker than the state law allows. and if you can get the glass polished and the majority of the scratches out, maybe you could have the tint redone over the polished glass- tint covers up a lot- sometimes too much as the sherriff has already told you.

were you told by the tint shop about local laws? If not im sure you could sue them for replacement of the windows in question due to their tint. In minnesota its 50% on all windows and no tint allowed on the front. Some shops here warn of the 50% law but will offer no warranty or guarantee on darker tints.. more of a "buy at your own risk" type deal

Is your glass really scratched up? I am sure there is away to get it some what better. I was told once to use liquid rouge.

Talk to a few body shops i bet they can clean it up.

Ive heard of some glass polishes or fillers. At this point you probobly wont get the glass back to original. If you do use a glass polish or compound it may help but leave the the glass hazy looking
