What is the speed limiter set at for a 94 Trans Am, auto?

Last weekend I was with my buddies and it got up to 120 but then it would go into 4th gear for some reason, could this be why?

If it is a speed limiter usaly the engine will shut off, so i think that was not it. And if it is i don't think they set them that low on a lt1-350. I think the stock ones are at like 157, but i might be wrong. Just get on a long stretch and when it hits the 4th just smash it again and see if it will kick out, or if it just bogs.

Your engine will NOT shut off on you going 120 MPH. Speed limiter retards timing or cuts fuel. Won't allow you to accelerate anything past the limiter.
But it will not cause your motor to shut off. That would be seriously dangerous. In gear and your motor just dies....

It's my understanding that the earlier 4th gen cars had 2 versions.

1- if your car had the 155 mph speedometer, the car came with the z rated tires and had a 159 speed limit (maybe 157, not exactly sure. either way the stock car didn't have the power to reach 160 which was the speed these cars were "designed" to achieve)

2- if you car has the 115 mph speedometer, your car came with al lseason radials nad had a lower speed limit, around 108 mph.

Does your car have any aftermarket goods, liek the hypertech power programmer, maybe a Jet controle module, etc? The hypertech program is capable of eliminating the speed limiter, but some of the other aftermarket products don't do as good a job.

Also, when your car reaches 4th gear, does the speed continue to increase or does your car stumble and stay the same speed? what exactly happens when your car reaches 4th gear?

i did not mean like it just shut off and it all locks up, i should have wored it diffrent, but when i had my cav i ran the hell out of it and it would "kick down" at 108.

I figured that is what you meant...but the wording was a little odd.

It cuts power basicly.

ya that is what i ment, but you do not want to go real fast if you have stock tires so don't go over the rating, because you have a chance of blowing a tire and that would not be good at 120mph+.

Your car should top out around 150 - 155 MPH stock.
