97 mercury tracer shifter cable!!!!!

my shifter cable broke and I have some idea about how to replace it. i do, however, have a couple of questions.
1) how am i supposed to get the cable through the firewall?
or
2) does the cable seperate at any point? it broke right at the eyelit thingy that attaches to the tranny and actually does the shifting?
i broke it when i was replacing the starter. long story but all i have to say is that Hayes manuals aren't worth a shit!!:frown:
