Geo Metro start trouble

been parked for a year - put in battery checked fluids and it started -- drove for a couple of hours - filled tank and would not start -- mechanic says the solenoid was hot --- doI need a new starter solenoid?
lights are bright - turn key all normal dash lights stay lit but no turn over at all
