I am a female and I need some help. I purchased a 1999 ford expedition and the check engine light is on. I had it diagnosed and was told the #4 cylinder was misfiring. Could someone tell me some signs of this? My truck is skipping, and cutting off if constant pressure isn't applied to accelerator. Sluggish driving. Are these some of the signs? Help Please?

Check the wires first to make sure they are in good repair. Just make sure it's as dark as possible with the hood up and the engine running and look for any arching. On mine it was a comination of the wires and the ignition coils. I have a 4.6 in mine so it only has the two. make sure there are no cracks and such, and you can like wise check those by removing the wires one at a time and have someone start the engine and look for teh spark in the hole if it's weak replace the coil(s). Spark plugs could be it as well, but wasn't the case with mine. Good luck

Do you know if it was tuned up before you bought it? If not, a complete tune-up could solve the problem.

the heater hose is leaking onto the coil(pretty common) the hose clamp needs to be tightened and #4 plug and coil replaced.

When i had it diagnosed i wasn't sure if the diagnosis was correct. I had the Ford dealership do a minor tune up. If i would have gotten the #4 replaced I feel i would have been better off. If I have a full tune up will that replace the #4 cylinder and take care of other cylinders and coil. Thanks everyone for your help. I amcompletely lost and I don't want any mechanic to try to take advantage of me. I have 5.4. in mine.

#4 ignition coil is more than likely ruined if coolant from the heater hose has been dripping on it.if this is in fact the case with you then only #4 ignition coil will have to be replaced. however it would be a good idea to have all the spark plugs replaced if you haven't had that done yet.

had the same problem last winter, had 2 coils go out 1 week apart, 250$ to diagnose and replace the 1st one (#4) a bit less for the next one, a tuneup runs around 250$, this is all at the ford dealer by the way, spendy little suckers!

No spendy is a "suspension rattle" that turned out tobe a bad muffler clamp. Explained the parked truck makes the rattle how could it be suspension? Thank goodness for your local garage.

I know this is waaaay late, but for those who have the same problem and are reading this, here ya go. I had the same problem. Mine was misfiring on cylinder 3. The diagnostic and to replace the one coil and plug was $250. That's not even to change the rest of the plugs. It was going to be an additional $180 to replace all the plugs. That sounds waay to steep and I won't be going back to that service center.
I would've done the work myself but it's a bear to get to the rear spark plugs (gotta take off the fuel rails, etc). So just have your #4 coil and that plug changed and see how if it runs after that. Expeditions are notorious for coils going bad so you might have other that are bad as well. Good luck.

I have a 1998 Navigator. I had a coil go out. It was the 3rd one in. Almost the back one. It took me 6 hours to change it and replace 6 plugs. I could not get to the back two. I was quoted $300 to just change the plugs. It is becuase it is extremely hard to get too. Most misfires are caused by bad coil packs. Coil packs are about $100 at a local parts store.

From my experience I've noticed that most misfires on Fords come from plugs, Ford engines are sensitive creatures they like Motorcraft plugs. I've also seen quite a bit of them where the guy who did the tune up figured it be easier if he didn't change plug #4.
If there s no coolant leaking onto the coil, then its either the coil or the plug to check which remove the coil and the plug from cyl#4 and put them in a more accesible cyl, for example put the plug on cyl #1 and the coil on cyl#2, disconnect then reconnect the battery wait for the CEL to come on and have the codes pulled. The cyl that misses will tell you what the problem is.
Remember to put the spark plug and coil from the other cyl s on cyl #4 before running it and don't run the vehicle to long with the misfire an ignition misfire could cause cat. converter failure. This might seem like a lot of work but would you rather spend $100 plus another $5 for the plug, or just $5 for the plug, if the coil is ok.
