Testing Internal Ignition Coil

I have an '93 Camry that has an internal ignition coil. I'm not getting any fire and I think it may be the coil. Is there any way of testing it? Also I'm not sure how to replace it. Do you have to pull the distributor or can you just pull the rotor, then the cover to access the coil?

It depends on the engine.

Do you mean a '93 Camry? 03 doesn't have distributor or rotor. Which engine is it? 4 or 6?

I'm sorry, it's a 1993 with a 2200 4 cyl.

When I tested the coil the primary winding tested in spec but the secondary winding was out of spec by 5k ohms. I went ahead and changed the coil, dist. cap and rotor. The engine fired but I've got a little adjusting to do. I didn't have feeler guages to check and adjust the gaps inside the dist which I will do tomorrow. Also the condenser looked as though it got pretty hot at one time so I'm going to change that as well. I'll post again when I get it running smooth again.

It's fixed! Looks like it was the coil. But now it has a new dist. cap, rotor and coil! I got a little quick on the dist. install the first time, pinched one of the wires inside the dist. That is what caused the rough running. Corrected that and everything is fine now.

That's great! Thanks for posting your solution.
