anyone do much more than just lightly cut the primer on their car? do you polish it like you would the finish top coat or no?

No, part of the purpose of primer is giving the paint something to "bite" into physically, as well as chemically. Now, you don't want to leave a rough surface, but polishing it out like you would a topcoat wouldn't be any good, either.

I have found that 360Spider's tip of "brushing" the final primer coat with regular toothpaste gives an ideal surface to put paint on. Just be sure to wash it thoroughly afterwards though to remove the toothpaste.

Added benefit is no decay or cavities in your top coat :)
