odd oil pressure problem

A friend of mine just called me with a seemingly odd oil pressure problem in his 97 wrangler 4L. He says that, as he's going down the street, his oil pressure will drop dangerously low, sometimes all of the way to zero. He pulls off the road and the oil pressure comes back at idle? My first thought was to test the pressure with a mechanical gauge, but if his guage reads normal at idle, that may not tell us anything. He's got plenty of oil, the motor doesn't tick, and temp stays normal. does this sound like a sending unit? pump?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Check oil sending unit. I went to a mechanic to have it checked and he started talking about main seal leak and that I would need a new engine costing around 3-4 thousand and he continued and I stopped him and said. Could it be the oil pressure sending unit. He said we could check it and low and behold it was a $50 sending unit. I had same problem at idle the pressure was around 40 but going down the road a ways it dropped to 0. No ticking pinging or other problems just the gauge on the dash. The sending unit is on the passenger side of the engine toward the front. I have a 97 4.0L Sahara so I hope its the same problem. Quick and inexpensive fix.

I had a similar issue on my 1995. When I was driving the pressure gauge was reading all the way up. When I'd put the gas to the floor it would read the correct pressure. It was a $35 pressure sending unit.
