I have a 93' escort LX w/ a 1.9L. I heard that if I took the Air Filter Housing and make a bigger hole in it at the bottom that I would gain more mileage? And if so, then how do I go about making a hole in plastic like that?

i would throw out the air filter box and just add on an aftermarket filter. you could find them cheap at auto zone or where-ever. or if you want to spend morei would just put on a cold air intake. you will get more horse power and TQ. it makes your gas mileage really good to.

Take the air box off and put it upside-down on a bench. take a drill and drill a serious of holes around the larger side of the air box.(as you will see its split 70/30ish). Then cut the pattern out. nice big air hole for the car to breathe. Also, take out the air silencer while your at it(the tube that goes onto the pre-made hole there in the air box. Just use a filter and you'll be good to go. Takes about 30 minutes start ~> finish and works great.
Or you can go spend (GOD only knows how much) and do what the above poster said..but with cutting the bottom of the air box, it does the same thing. I did it because I had access to a drill and it cost me zero $$ in doing so. Its your choice.
