3000GT Top Speed........

Just curious as to what speed the VR-4 are limited too, I floored my 99 SL to a measly 120mph:banghead: :banghead: my Taurus 1990 SHO was faster than that, it went to 135mph and it's a four door, Hell, even the police dodge intrepid is faster than that!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking to get a VR-4 soon, and in light of the recent discovery VERY VERY SOON, but I wanted to know how fast they are, or what's the fastest you've ever heard someone go up to.

Every SL Ive ever been in will do a good amount over 120. They were all stick, so that may have something to do with it.

VR4's do about 160 stock.

Unless I was confused, it didn't go past 120mph, THAT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can understand an SUV limited to 120 but a soprts car, that is some bullshit.

I think Sl's usually top out at about 140. 120mph stick or not is not the top speed unless someone stuck a governor on it.

Yeah wow thats really slow somethings the matter with ur sl i have a 1996 base with the Dohc 24v and i have toped it out around 146mph and it was redlineing so something is the matter with ur car man.

Morphius289

The VR4 tops out at around 165-ish. I think.

*edit*
Also, I have the SOHC, and even mine can get up to 134mph. I know this because, when my friend owned the car, he got clocked by the police at that speed:rofl:

I'll go try it again soon, hope the cops aren't out patrolling.

^the auto's final gearing is similar to the 6th gear on the VR4 (I think) so from that I'm assuming that an auto'd have a higher top speed...

No way your redlining a DOHC at 146mph. The SOHC will redline a little higher than that with 1k less rpms.

And yes something is definitely the matter if youcan only get to 120. I have hit 130 many times in my SOHC, and taken it to 140 once.

my 1994 sl does 110 in third. ive only had it going 130 but there was plenty of room to go

^stock? wow thats pretty good.

i onced ran a 2nd gen sl up to about 135, then we hit traffic, so yea, go give it another shot.

Maybe stock. There are quite a few documented at over 180 and a few have hit the magical 200mph.

If i get stationed in germany i'll let you all know :evillol: :ylsuper: but really 200mph stock ??? that would be wild to say the least.

i dont think he means 200 stock, he's saying modded.

I have a 91 sl atx and I got thrown in jail for doing 144 on I-35 going to Austin from San Antonio. Not the smartest thing I've ever done and I'll never do it again *cough* *cough*

No no, not stock. You need to be making a decent amount of power to hit those speeds. I figured that you meant stock though.

on the suject of topspeed anybody know what it is for the MR?
also rought guestamint around 500hp to the wheels what speed you think that would put you at?

The MR(or any Jspec TT for that matter) would have a lower top speed due to the shorter gearing. I am not sure how much shorter 6th is for the Jspecs though.

talskinyguy

As far as power to go a certain speed. To hit 200mph you will need 500+hp

Another fun fact it takes about 3.5 times more power to go 150mph as it does to go 100mph.

Hey Morpheus, where you from in Texas? And was that picture of your car taken around Concan?

Morphius289
01-24-2006, 08:11 AM
I live in Austin. The picture was taken at Bull Creek. It was a pain in the ass to get the car down there though. Even though the ground looks flat in that picture, there were huge bumps all over. Not too much fun:rolleyes:

The MR and GTO top speeds are the same, and Im sure they are very close to the top speed of the 3000GT. Not counted computer limited top speeds.

USDM and JDM have a different final drive ratio, but the top speed is about the same. The only thing gearing has to do with top speed is placement in the powerband.

I agree on the carful part, I think I've learnt alot from my T-Ram days, cops aren't linient when it comes to that.

I'll check again, I want to find out before I sell it, but 165mph stock, wow, guess I will not be missing the SL anytime soon, maybe when it comes to repairs and Ins. but thatnk's guys, I was worried a bit. But damn the thing is actually very quick to 60mph if you ask me, I hit 60mph in second when I hit the power button, but for some reason, third gear looses that OOmph until about 4000RPM, then again picks up. Don't know what the 0-60 time is, but I'm willing to bet it might be able to keep up with a GT Stang.

I'm drooling now thinking of that VR-4, they need to hurry up and send me that damn title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah man u should try that again i hit 125 on road the only reason i stoped was becasue i was running out of room and wasent even close to redlineing it btw i only have school permit ^^

If 6th is shorter in GTO's though, then the gear limiting will change.

Ya you should deff try again. I got my 95 SL ATX up to 145mph. i dont think it could do much more tho.

A school permit is basicly a permit that allows a 15 year old to drive by them self w/o an adult. But only to school and back. I'm pretty shure...

I used to have a school permit when I was 14. I could drive to school and school events by myself (Nebraska: The Good Life). Otherwise I had to have an adult with me. On the topic of top speed, a stock speedometer might not give the most accurate readings at those high speeds.

No, I think the speedometer was right, I've hit 135mph, and I could tell I wasn't going that fast.
Yeah, and the law is, 100mph or more is a ticket to jail, no if's, ands' or but's about it. Will definately need a scout to check the road ahead. Hope there is a clear day over the weekend.

On a side not, I don't want to sound like a party pooper, and I know most of us are aware of the risks of speeding, but sometiems we get caught up in the moment, but we've got to be careful, I can't throw caution to the side, not to scare anyone, but my friend is lying in the ICU as we speak, he has been there since Dec 17th, and is on life support. I look at him, and I know he wasn't racing, but I don't know what went wrong, but he is totally messed up. I haven't known him for that long infact, I started talking to him cause I saw his Skyline R33, and we just started talking. After seeing him like that, I ............................. speechless. Please, please, lets be careful, no one deserves the fate he is going through, nobody.

I second that. Its all fun and games until you crash into a tree and die. Or even worse, crash into a car full of kids. Be safe ya'll.
