Security light

I have a 02 silverado z71 that i had best buy install a viper remote start in back in july. the other day i was driving home from work the Security light come on. It does only seem to come on when starting the truck with the remote starter. I took it to best buy and they said nothing was wrong. took it to the stealership their "security monitor" didn't find anything wrong either. but the light still comes on

The security bypass module is either:
a) incompatible
b) faulty
c) wired incorrectly and or connections not soldered.

Wouldn't this have been a problem right after the starter was installed? It took almost 8 months before it happened

Not if it has since gone bad and become faulty

The Best Buy's and the like of the world are really not the place to get an install with todays high tech vehicles. First thing is they don't really have knowledgeable and experienced installers that understand the operation of todays vehicle elecronics. I see a lot of vehicles that get electronics put in that end up having problems show up shortly thereafter. You really want an experienced GM tech with all the manuals and tools to do the job. To do the job properly these days, you need to have the install done by the dealer. That way there is no pasing the buck between installer and dealer as what happened in your case.
Check the wiring and make sure the bypass module is indeed wired correctly and make sure it is properly soldered and not just connected with scotch locks or the like. You would be surprised how many installs are not soldered. When the connections become loose the resistance changes thereby thowing out the values that the computer is looking for and tripping the security light.
If all's ok there, then replace the bypass module.
