99 altima idle drops (help please)

my altima will start to die when i stop, the idle drops and if i dont press the gas pedal it will die, i have replaced air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and fuel filter and i still have the same problem..... when i had the hood open and the car in park i took off the top of the air filter and it would keep running but as soon as i closed the lid to the filter it would die. if anyone can help please let me know

i just got it back from the mechanic and they said that the mass airflow sensor is the problem.... they told me they could tap the sensor and the car would die i took it home and tried tapping it myself and the car didnt die?!?! they couldn't give me a quote until monday but the guy estimated the cost of the part to be $350 bucks!! does anyone know if that price is close? or does anyone think that it could be something else?

well you can get a used sensor for around $50 (ebay), and yea, it sounds like the MAFS is the problem, going to have to replace it. you could probably find a new one for around $150.00... and installing it yourself is easy.

I agree, but try cleaning out the MAF BEFORE you replace it. Also, have you tried taking it to AUTOZONE for a check? It is free and it may be something else. Anything but dont pay 350.00.

firstof all,tapping a maf is not the proper way to check it and it doesnt sound like thats your problem.sounds like you have an idle air control problem.the first thing you need to do is check your throttle body chamber and clean it if needed.this is where your air intake hose hooks to your intake manifold.aftercleaning you will need to have your iac valve properly adjusted to ensure your idle is correct-you'll have to visit your dealer as they have the proper tools to do this-ive seen this quite often
