Blower motor fix

Just wanted to thank Bnaylor, jr6078, and others who've been so kind to post descriptions of this fix.

I just got through fixing the infamous dead AC/Heater problem (dead on all settings).

A quick rundown of how it went for me:

First, the fuse by the passenger door was fine, however Fuse #53 (30A) under the hood was blown. Replacing this fuse got the highest fan speed setting to work, but all others still remained dead.

So, on to the blower motor resistor. GM appears to have changed the part number...my dealership no longer carries #15359314, but instead #89018413 ($23).

As described, it's located under the passenger dashboard, way back against the firewall. You remove a couple of plastic covers to get access, then there's a square black plastic module that you can "slide" to the right to get out of the way.

The resistor is held in with (2) 7/32" screws. I found an extra 6" extension on my ratchet to be a great help (in addition to the universal joint and 4" stock extension).

Removed it. Installed the new one. Put everything back together, and all fan speeds now work.

Start-Finish time was just about 1 hour.

hey ya today was the day my heat and air did not work. My blower was not even working to my dismay i got a new resistor and while putting it in my touched the plugin to the blower and it kicked on and off so i wiggled it more and found out that the connection was bad on the blower motor nothing a lil duct tape would fix lol

I would just like to thank and show a little empathy for all of you who write in and talk about the same problems I'm having with my 2001 Alero. It has been a great help knowing I'm not the only one having these problems and seeing how they can be fixed without having to go to a dealer and pay outrageous fees. THANK YOU!

I just wanted to thank bnaylor3400 and mancur for the info on the blower fan resistor fix. I have a 1999 Alero and had this done once under warranty the second year I had it. They apparently replaced the OEM 15359314 with a 15369330 made on 6/29/00. This new one promptly died within 6 months of the 3 year car warranty running out! I did'nt know how costly it might be at the dealer so I held off having it fixed and lived with a two-speed fan until I read your fix. I did the repair myself in about a back-breaking hour (next time I WILL remove the passenger seat first!). It was a bear getting the last screw in but a delight to have all speeds working again. I might add that the replacement board is longer than the oneI pulled out but no problem, the new one had plenty of room in the space. Thanks again to all.
PS: Still love the car! It's gonna break my heart to trade her this year!

I think ,this information will be useful .
After 2 lower blower speeds stopped to work 3 monts ago I had fixed my old blower motor resistor using a soldering iron . I found ,that similar ACDElco "patch" exists on blower resistor from beginning (4.5 years) and did one more "patch". The blower motor is still Ok. I believe , it will work more..

Remember to check resistor's electrical connector terminals for corrosion. The excessive resistance will certainly cause circuit board solder to overheat.

Clean terminals and apply a bit of dielectric grease to help prevent corrosion.
