painting yellow...

Hey guys!

i'm here, found this forum and it rawks!!!

anyways i'm a newbie at modelling.. i've done like 2 kits and they are ok


i was wondering, I am painting my Revell Corvette Z06, gloss yellow with the Testors Enamel, what is a good base coat to use so it doesn't turn out super bright?

Well the only way to get the yellow to really look yellow is to use a white basecoat. But if you don't want it to be that bright use a gray basecoat, which will make the yellow darker. Don't use a black one as it will probably make the yellow too dark.

what about just a grey primer then the yellow top coat? that should be ok huh?

Yellow top coat over grey primer would be fine, however I would recommend you test it out on a scrap piece of plastic just to make sure you're happy with the brightness of it. I'd test both primers (yellow over grey and yellow over white) and see which one you like better.

i called around here and noone has it
and i can't find automotive white primer either..

i'll stick with my grey for a bit...


i did once use a flat white enamel as the base coat and then used a pearl white over it.. looked kinda cool.

I've got that same model and am painting it Testors Gloss Yellow as well. For the primer I used Krylon white primer. I got it a Wal-Mart. So far the yellow looks really good.

i used a testors rattlecan over white primer for my vette
testors yellow over grey looks a little too dark to be corvette millenium yellow, and the tamiya yellow seems a bit too bright

I might be able to get some pics up if you want to see how the Testors yellow looks on white primer.

I wouldn't recommend gray for the base coat of yellow though... It should be tested to see how it would turn out.
I'm going to paint one of my in-progress model in yellow, and this is how I'm going to do.

gray primer -> white primer -> orange* -> yellow -> clear

* If orange is too dark, Tamiya makes Camel Yellow spray can, which is made for Camel sponsored Lotus kit, and it can be used for the base color to make the final yellow less toy-like.

or maybe i should just use the camel yellow i got saved for my revell ITR.

You need a white base coat first.

Have you thought about using Tamiya Chrome Yellow as IMO its the nicest shade of yellow
