Cold Air Intake

I just recently got an 02 celica that came equipped with a cold air intake. The exhaust pipe is coated heavily in black on the inside, and I heard from a couple people that these cold air intakes can cause your car to burn way to much fuel and down the road blow your master airflow sensor. Is this true and how can I fix this/prevent this? Thanks, braden
