Could anyone give me an estimate on how long it should take to replace the timing belt tenioner? Also how much parts should cost?

Just the tensioner pushrod is probably $50-100 for a genuine isuzu. This is a labor intensive job, I'm guessing at 6-8hrs for a dealer. I would think you would be looking at $400-500 minimum. To just replace the tensioner would be silly. Due to labor overlap, replacing the timing belt, water pump and tensioner components is most cost effective.

It cost me $600 about 5 years ago to have the water pump, timing belt and tensioner done on my '88. It was about $200 in parts and the rest in labor.

I was actually planning on doing this all myself and was wondering if anyone had done this themselves. If so was it worth the agrivation to do it yourself, or should i just get a mechanic to do it.

ordan I have an 88 trooper, it took me two hours to change the tensioner pully. the longest part was taking off the timing belt cover. the rest was easy.

If you have not done this before, read some other posts carefully before you remove the old timing belt. I had never done it before and did not mark anything before I removed the old one. I have a '94 and it took me a good 8 hours over a couple of days. I also did the water pump

jordan I was worth the trouble and to have the satisfation when it starts and runs really smooth. it's great. now youcan take it to a mechanic and send 5-600 dollars to do the same thing you can in a few hours. last thing if you have an autozone near you use the loan a tool program to get a harmonic ballancer pulley to remove the crankshaft pulley to get the bottom timing belt cover off. thats the best advice I can give.

i have a 93 trooper s, i replaced the belt at 160k mi, the last time it was replaced was at 60k based on my assumption since the previous owner did not know when it was replaced when he got it at 60k mi. I did not replace the teniosner pulley since its still in good shape but it cost $155.00. these are dealer parts, after market you can find it a lot less. here are the prices for the other parts I replaced.
timing belt $84.00
water pump $189.00
idle pulley $115.00
hydraulic push rod teniosner $102.00
3 belts $52.00
replace coolant.
and oil change.
This is a big job but it can be done. It took me two days to finish it while taking my time and to check other things on the way. I hope this help. good luck and enjoy.
