Hey guys,,, after driving the 2.0 beetle today,,, not much, maybe 50 miles, about half on highway...
I started to hear a slight knock from under the car, when i jacked it up, it appeared to be coming from the CAT!
I dont know why it would be coming from the cat??
Could it have gone bad? what the hell? never heard of such a thing,,,
please help,
Thanks~

cats are a problem on 2.0's. there is an extended vw emissions warranty for 98-00 beetle with the 2.0 AEG engine to 120k miles. rattling cat sounds like a rock being shaken around in a metal coffee can. ALso check the midpipe exhaust mount right after the cat. the welds commonly break and the pipe rattles on the bracket.

hey,
thanks!! hell yea, it would be great if they replace under warranty. It does sound like dried shit in a coffee can. lol
anyways, yea, i checked the mounts.. i though my system had bumped somthin loose.
Thanks!!!
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow~

Hey, after going in to the dealership today, they gave me a TSB stating it was only for 99 and above...
So basically, im screwed with a thousand dollar cat.. wtf?
But opportunity has come for an exhaust system... I have one coming in, pics soon.

call vw and complain. there is no reason vw wouldnt extend the warranty to your vehicle, all you got to do is complain. I have seen this done on cabrios 99-01 with 2.0 for maf meters.

Yea, i am going to do that first thing in the morning,,, I have already placed an order for a cat-back system so i guess i can just tell them to give me the part, if they install it.. im gonna take it back out anyways, so if anyone needs a cat..
THESE SHITS ARE 1,000 dollars!! YES A THOUSAND!!!!

I have the same problem with my 99 2.0L. Have gone to the dealer and said need a new cat and not under warranty. I have 89,000 miles. Paid $108 just to check the damn thing. New dealer cat is about $800. What have you decided about the cat? I was just thinking of going to the muffler shop and cut and weld the universal one for about $150. Would this be ok or do I need dealer cat?
