3800 tranny how difficult?

OK, apparently the loud noise is in the tranny. It only occurs when in gear. under load, and it makes the van labor in acceleration and will not downshift properly. I haven't priced having a rebuilt tranny installed yet, but I know I can buy a reman for $700. How difficult is this tranny to drop? Do I have to drop the motor and tranny or just drop the carriage and remove the tranny? I've done trannys in several other vehicles, but never on a 3800, or any GM FWD for that matter...

i removed my tranny last autumn using instructions LMP posted. It took few nights, did it outside. I lifted my van with jacks, and lowered tranny+subframe down with a friend. Not a bad job, but without those instructions it would have been much harder. You need to make or buy a support bar to hold engine in place. I used 40x40mm U-bar to construct it.
