RC 211V Carbon

Hello all..

I've never built a motorbike before, I actually never even thought about building them, but the Honda RC211V really caught my eye. I guess I'm a sucker for orange wheels..:p Anyway, I thought I would try something a little different and make all the body panels carbon fiber. The chassis would also be black. Instead of painting the chassis just black, I thought I was try to go for a powdercoated look. Through trial and error (on scrap pieces of course..) I've found out which works best.

- Strip "chrome" using bleach
- Apply few light coats of grey primer (Tamiya)
- Wet sand with 3M Imperial 1500grit, until little white starts to show through
- Mix 5:1 of semi gloss black and chrome silver. This will give a very glittery black
- A few layers of just semi gloss black and voila! The semi gloss paint works very well in replicating the semi smoothness of powdercoat. You can also see just a little tiny bit of silver if you look at it in the light. Even the texture of it is just right.

Hi. Great to someone looking outside the square. Great idea with the paint.
Will follow this one. Just take your time with this being your first bike and if you get stuck just ask. There are a lot of fantastic bike builders here.

Just got done with the engine. I just need to give it a proper wash. The clutch cover.. cover will be covered with CF decal.

Excellent start on your first bike, definitely look forward to seeing more. Thanks for your tip on the paint, I will have to store that for later use.

Thanks for the comments. I'm still waiting to get my CF decals from scale motorsports, and then intensive work goes into the body panels. I have a question though, what surface is the best to apply the CF decal onto? Bare plastic? Sanded plastic? Primer? Paint?

For the engine tubes exists some Twin Hose Band sets of Acustion there is a few pictures in internet to see all the details of this model, and if you want to do the best details exists a very good book with photo references called Moto Grand Prix Racers Archive 2003 ( and 2004)

WoW, nice start...

Ok, I've been getting things done slowly with my classes geting in the way. Or is it the other way around? :wink::grinyes: I've gotten the frame done, attatched the engine, rear suspension, brakes. Still have to do the front suspension, gas tank, and a few others.

Here is my problem though, I've been trying to do all the body panels in carbon fiber. No matter how much mocrisol I use no matter how much I heat it up, the decals just won't conform to the surfaces. I've tried cutting the decals slightly smaller to fit the pieces but I still get wrinkles. I have waited hours to see if the wrinkles would flatten, but that doesn't work. I followed lots of different tutorials on applying CF decals but to no avail.. What am I doing wrong? I don't have any pics, cause I keep tearing the darn decals off cause I've been getting so angry about it. Maybe I'll attempt it again tonight, and if it doesn't go well I'll take pics and put it up.

Finally got a little work done on the bike. I've been drowning in school work for the last month, so I've barely made time to work on the bike.

Great job on the CF work.

Im getting a box with photobucket bandwith exceeded. The one pic looks great. Ive been wanting to do that, once I finish my M1, I think Im gonna do that to my new Ducati. Nice job!

Wow, really nice start! That CF job on the lower cowl is amazing. If you keep that up on the other cowling parts this one will be a stunner!
