I hjave cleaned my engine/engine bay many times with a pressure washer, never once did I cover anything up or removed the battery and I always did it with the engine running.
The only thing that I would worry about would be to make sure the screws for the distributor cap are tight, if any moisture got inthe distributor cap it would run a lil rough for a lil while until the cap dried out.

do it with the engine off....after u just drove it, when its warm.. then, cover ur distribitor and any air filter.....then i usually spray on the cleaner and let it work and sit....then scub if u have to and spray more...then just blast it all off with water and let it drip dry before u drive it right away again.....carry wd40 if u have to cause it repels water if u get any in ur cap and will also be a great conductor for electricity.....just dont spray it on ur belts lol

There are some cleaners that you can spray on first like Gunk, seems to work good. But make sure your distributer does not get water into it like dksob81 said, cuz i have done it and it wont run right for about a half hour.
