Problem for Techs

Here is a problem for the folks with the grey matter. I have to change the battery in my 99 v6 EX. I don't want to cut the power to the radio and have to go through the code crap cause I don't have them (radio removal etc.) How can I swap batteries with out cutting power or blowing myself up??? Thanks, Charlie

As far as I know it you can proof to a dealer that you are the owner of the car they will give you the codes to reset the radio.

I change batteries with the car running.Just be careful not to touch the postive cable to anything.

Will the car run without a battery???

Yes it will but there is a potential of a voltage spike and it could damage the control unots.

the best way is to remove the under hood fuse box cover. there will be two cables that are held in with a 8mm bolt. Trace the one that goes to the battery and jump 12volt either from a booster pack or from another car using booster cables and put the negative to ground. thats the safes way.

if you are truly concerned, most auto supply stores sell a device with a small battery that plugs into your cig/aux power output. It supplies the correct voltage and enough current to keep your ECM/radio/ect settings in tact when changing a battery.

I've heard a couple of clip leads and an off the shelf regular ole 9V battery (plus a quick main battery swap) will accomplish the same thing

Redly 1--that will only work if you keep the ignition switch on during the whole battery swap procedure. If you turn the key off, it will de-energize the cigarette relay and the power loop to the radio will be lost.

I have one of those portable battery jumpers the kind you plug into the wall to charge and then you can throw it in your trunk. It has a cord that plugs into a cigarette lighter for a charge or it will keep your ecu and radio settings. The key has to be turned on and you need to be very careful not to touch your positive cable to any ground while changing the battery.

But the power will still go to the radio if it's plugged in to the cig/aux outlet. It's all common to the ign relay you mentioned
