:banghead: I have a 1980 Old cutlass with the V-6. I do not know much about cars so you help will be greatly appreciated. Firdt all, my Oil/Choke light started staying on constantly. While driving to work, I lost alot of power and could not go faster than 30mph. Then I was pretty much at a stand still. I waited for about 15mins and started the car. Started just fine but the oil/choke light is still on and no power when I hit the gas. Seems to idle just fine though. Any ideas?

does the service engine soon light come on. i dont know if a car that old has one. but if it does run codes. if its on of course. check the oil level in the car. and see if its dirty, may need an oil change along with a new filter. and check the trans fluid to. see if its full and or dirty. u may want to flush it and get a new filter for that too. also. any odd noises since this started happening?

No on the engine light. The only light that is on is the Oil/Choke. Not any new noises, but it always sounds like a popcorn machine. Could a clogged fuel filter be the problem?

a popcorn machine as in a constant ticking noise that increases with throttle application???

oil choke lite could be low oil pressure or a blown fuse for the electic choke on the carb.

clogged or nearly clogged oil filter could cause some issues. if the oil is dirty. might as well do an oil and filter change.

Probably clogged fuel lines. If you have not replaced the fuel filter in a long time, then try to replace it. If your vehicle has more than one fuel filter which some vehicles has extra fuel filter near the engine then replace that too if your vehicle comes with one.
When you say no power at all, does the engine hesitates/stumbles when you try to rev the engine? If so, it could be a clogged catalytic converter.
If the engine does not hesitate or stubles when you try to rev the engine then more than likely fuel issue. Check fuel filters.

I had a problem when i got my 96 Cutty. The problem was that te fuel filter was so clogged no gas was getting to the engine.I could floor it and it would take about 10sec to get to 30mph.It was for me the Fuel filter, and my fuel pump blew so i had to get 1.Plus i got a new air filter and did a oil change along with a Rad flush and every things is sweet as could be now.To see if your cat is bad hit it soft with a rubber hammer and see if anything rattles if so i think it would be bad.
