Possible 1993 F-150 ECM problem?

I have a 1993 F-150 Flareside, 5.0L, AOD automatic transmission, 114,000 mi. I bought it used last summer.:smokin: It had little maintenance on it so I did the usual....spark plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve. It ran fine. However, the transmission was shifting alittle roughly and feels like it is upshifting at the incorrect times. I changed the fluid and filter...fluid looked good, no particles.
Being a Ford Truck, it gets crappy gas mileage, but it seems like I'm getting 8-10 MPG. I drive normally, I don't gun it and have mostly city driving.
I think I am burning too rich of a mixture of gas, since I smell it greatly out the exhaust when I shut the engine off...I suspect its possibly the time to change the O2 sensor.:grinyes:
Now, here's my question....since the transmission has no bands to adjust like a C4-6 and is controlled by the ECM....and the fuel is burning richly, which is controlled by the ECM...and I have SOMETIMES a low idle RPM (@650), and the idle is controlled by the ECM...DO I POSSIBLY HAVE A BAD ECM???:shakehead Even though I have no check engine light on...not even intermittently.
How does one go about getting an ECM checked? Autozone?

Thank you!

You need to get the engine running properly before you try to diagnose the trans problem. Throttle position and the throttle valve position of the trans, affect the shift points. Run the trouble codes on it and if you have an ecm problem, there are a number of codes that it may set. Auto zone can do this for you, or you can do it with the data connector and mil. Check the static timing, somebody could have messed with it before you got it. Check the exhaust, converter, fuel pressure(and regulator)...ect. If youre only getting 8-10 mpg, youve got a problem, and it could be affecting the shift points. Once you get it running good, if it still shifts funny, check the throttle valve and linkage adjustment, or have it checked at a trans shop. If you plan on keeping it, i suggest getting a good manual on it. You should be getting at least 16-18 with the 302. Good luck.

Ecms rarely fail on the fords.Fuel pressure regulator do. You need to have it scanned for codes and have the fuel pressure checked. Also try removing red vacuum hose of the fuel pressure regulator and see if gas squarts out. It should not. My 93 5.8 f250 gets 15.8 on high way and 8 in town. My 87 Bronco 5.0 get 10 in town and 13 on highway. 8-10 is a little low. I have seen som map sensors fail and it would be good to get the injector flushed. at least pour a can of seafoam in the fuel tank.

I thank both of you for your responses to my question...here is an update to my problem.:screwy:
At cold startup, engine starts good, RPM of about 1100 or so. When I shift into Reverse, RPM drops to 700. After I come out of reverse and maybe slam it into PARK, RPM will oscillate between 500 and 1000 RPM. It seems that when I engage the transmission, my RPM's get real low, lights will dim, and battery meter still shows normal, but a LOW normal.:shakehead
At NEUTRAL, all is good with engine RPM.
Is this some adjustment to be made (TV cable?) Would this problem affect my MPG?(it sucks). Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Did you do tests to ecm and fuel pressure as asked? Isc could need cleaned. You SLAM your shifter in gear? The tv cable should not be adjusted by some one who hasent done one before. If you knock your pressure too low you WILL smoke the transmission. I think you need to get it running right first.
