Cams and head

I'm looking for a cheap alternative to hks cams. I was the run the 264 intake and 272 exhaust or whatever that would compute to in an alternative cam. Also will a 1g head bolt right up to a 2g block? What other things go along with that swap?

I'm pretty sure you gotta have some machining done for the 1g head to bolt up to a 2g block.

Yeah, I dont think its a big deal though. I know what you mean, HKS cams are really expensive. I'm getting Forced Performance cams (or Comp cams, same grind, different name). The FP2's are comparable to 272's with a little less low end and more top end (or so they say) and they are $430 for the pair. You could get a FP1 and FP2 combo, that should be pretty close to the 264/272 combo, but I would just stick with one set.

I thought the 1g head had better flow and the 2g head was more efficient.

will a 1g intake manifold fit on a 2g head? still a little in the dark on the whole head fitting

Yes they will fit, some water connections will have to be replaced. I know for a fact the waterneck will have to be replaced with a 1g. Intake manifold will fit as well.

I heard 264 on the intake will produce a much better idle compared to a 272 on intake, but that's up to you if you want to sacrifice that for power.

I want to do a 264 on the intake and 272 on the exhaust. I head the same thing. I think I said that, if not sorry. I was really looking for a cheap alternative to the hks versions

Do a set of fp2x cams.

I ran 264s and 272s on the 2g and I couldn't tell the fuckin difference... Maybe 1 lb/min flow difference, which really falls into the variablity in the measurement anyway. Idle was the same. I highly doubt the combination of the two would be anything magical. :)

You definitely don't want to use a 2g intake on a 1g head. Ask me how I know... The 1g head will flow ~3lbs/min more than a 2g on a 14/16g sized setup, or about 20-30 hp. Sounds like a deal to me. The 2g head does flow better, but ONLY at low/mid rpm levels. Going to the 1g block and head made the car "feel" a little laggier, even though the 14b was still spooling at the same exact rpm. Just a littleloss in off boost power, which makes sense considering the parts. The price you pay for top end power.

The swap isn't too bad. You'll need a 1g cas and some cooling parts. RRE I believe had the writeup. It's out there somewhere, this has been done and documented a thousand times.

Also, if you are going with the 1g head, and therefore the 1g manifold, you might as well do the 1g TB too. The 2g unit wont fit on the 1g manifold without a little grinding, and why bottleneck the 60mm manifold with a 52mm TB anyway... Just be sure to use the 2g TPS.

To be honest, I'm not sure I would bother with just the 1g head swap. I'd be tempted to wait until doing a full 6 bolt swap. But the choice is yours. I'm probably just getting lazy in my old age :D
