mine's a pretty long story.
when i was little i used to walk to school and everyday i saw this ferrari (didn't know what car it was at that time) but i knew it was fast because of the typical low swoopy car with a lot of gauges inside and stuff. ( can't remember but i think it was a testarossa or 348 tb). got into cars a little bit, just little things like i stated learning cars' names and stuff like that and when i got older i got more into exotics cos my neighbor drove an elise and this guy down the street from my school drove a green murcielago and i turned into one of those kids who think they know everything when they dont know sh*t.
muscle cars
when i got into middle school i met this guy who was into muscle cars (a lot) he seriously wouldn't shut the fuck up about them and pretty soon i got hooked too. i first started learning about camaro's since that was the only muscle car he knew and loved (ford hater) pretty soon i got bored so i didn't learn that much. i still buy a hot rod magazine once in a while but :disappoin just not for me.
lowriders
don't really know how i got into them but i just liked to see cars jump but after some time i figured out that the whole thing wasn't for me and i was pretty pissed since i had spent a lot of money on lowrider mags.
japs
not so proud of this but the fast and the furious and 2f2f actually got me into import cars, i turned into a ricer really fast (they call me the delivered ricer). never got a subscription to an import car magazine mostly because i didn't know what the fuck they were talking about and i think pimp my ride added to my riceiness (created a new word woot!!!!!). i got over the rice when i started wondering about all the technical stuff in the movies like what was coming out of the skyline's bumper (yeah i know it was nitrous purge) and soon ebough i was wondering about how other technical stuff like how an engine works, how a rotary engine works, how a turbo works and stuff like that and a few months after i found AF on the internet and joined. still have a lot to learn about imports and can somebody teach me how to memorize the freakin engine codes?
motorbikes
i've been into motorbikes since i was born like i used to pretend that i was revving an engine when i was on my bike or i put a soda can under my bike's fender to make it sound like an engine. but never got into it until this movie, not too proud to say it but it started when i saw biker boyz:banghead: i got seriously obsessed. i was into stunts and all that stuff but a few issues of sport rider set me straight.
conclusion: i like ricey movies

My dad, at first it was me sitting in the kitchen when i was a kid, and i would hear a loud clanking sound followed by "mother fucker, omg that hurt, sharon get a towel and some bandaids!!" Eventually i went out there to see what he was doing and it turns out he was working on his Camaro, i would sit there and watch him, and eventually he started showing me some stuff, and what to do. The first day he let me drive the camaro i was 18, he had just put a new cam in it. That's when i decided to make being around cars my career to.

I grew up with 3 older brothers...I've been around cars all my life. Which is kinda funny being as how I know NOTHING about cars other than how to race/drive them. (Although several states will disagree that I know how to operate a vehicle safely.) I can't even pump gas...I can check the oil though. That's gotta count for something right?

videogames. and these days since i commute on the metro to work, they are my closest thing to driving half the time. anyone play project gotham racing 3. its unbelievably realistic looking (a little less realistic driving). i got it from gamefly and i plan on keeping it. i hope xbox 360 gets a steering wheel soon to support this game.

my (ex) boyfriend loves cars and car audio so since i've known him for 3 years i was surrounded by it. we always were taking rides in his mustang gt and talking to his other car friends. sadly i still know virtually nothing about cars.

When I was little...like 3 years old, my dad had a '79 regal with a built 350 chevy in it. He let me sit on the fender and put the rockers in it...that was so cool. How many 3 year olds can say they know what roller rockers are? It had open headers with 3 inch collectors. It was loud to say the least. It was a sight to see it sit there and quake like it was about ready to molest something. He ended up selling it and buying a '91 camaro RS which is the sweetest looking one besides a '69 imo. Unfortunately my mom got the camaro in the divorce and traded it for a '97 lumina. Sadly, what got me into imports was F&F. I hated all the stickers but thought it was badass how they took econoboxes and made 'em run like raped apes.

I've been into cars my entire life. Started getting matchbox and hot wheels and anything else car related before i could even speak. The Testarossa a guy bought 2 blocks behind me when I was 3 drew my attention to Ferrari's. Even at the age they were way more than a car to me.

I cant think of a time in my life when I wasnt into cars. The first class I ever went to in high school was automotive tech, my truck i got when i was 14 was a piece of shit so I was always working on it, rebuilt the tranny at 15 before i even had my liscense. When I was like 4 I used to sit in my dads lap and he would let me steer his 1974 mercedes sl. The car I learned to drive a stick in was a 97 bmw z3....how could i not love cars!

Amen.
I'd spend many boring summer days as a young kid with my grandparents and my uncle left behind this big wooden chest of his old toys. There were some Hot Wheels, legos, and some dominos. So eventually I got the idea to set up the legos and dominos so that it marked out a road on the kitchen floor. Now that I think about it, I was simulating road racing before I ever knew what it was, lol. Videogames helped out alot too. The original Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit got me addicted big time. Then magazines fueled the flame. Sadly in my ricer days (we've all been there, plus I was like 14, stfu) I wanted a Civic, then an Integra. I remember I went to England while I was still in my ricer phase and I saw a R33 GT-R and thought not to much of it, just kinda like, eh, thats cool. Then I saw an Integra and I was like OHOHOHOHOOOOOOOOO SHIET! I so wish I would've realized that I might not ever see a Skyline again, lol. Then the internet and AF is where I gained alot of knowledge. Now I'm 18 with my own car and aspirations to go to UTI or something. I should write a book...

car magazines. my grandpa's been subscribed to MotorTrend since the 40's, so when i'd go over there for sunday dinners, i'd just spend my time reading. then my dad subscribed to Car and Driver, so i'd get a double shot of joy every month.
also, there's a road race by where i live out in nevada called the SilverState Classic that runs twice a year. it holds the public highway speed record, 227mph, by the way. the saturday before the race, they have all the cars parked for an exhibition downtown, so from a really early age i had the chance to see a lot of exotic cars close up and personal: lamborghini's, porsches, ferrari's, viper's, corvettes, bmw's. basically, just name a car and i've probably seen or even sat in it.
so that's my story

uhh im not really sure, i was never really into cars during high school, i wish i was but i didnt know jack shit. Then after HS i got my current car. I went to the dealership just to be looking around, and i saw my current cavalier. i took it for a test drive just for shits and giggles and i really liked it. Had everything i wanted, decent power, power everything, and it looked pretty good. So i bought the car that day, like 2 hours later. Then i found this website, then i found jbody.org. Then i started reading and learning all i could about cars, finally i started buying parts for my car and got into the whole scene.
Now im addicted to cars and everything involving them. I love hardcore acceleration. I think thast because i grew up with motorcycles, jetskis, snowmobiles and other fast gas powered vehicles.

Yeah, i was never really into cars during hs either. I had a grandam but it was nothing special. I guess when i got my 99 Ram is when i really started getting into stuff. Now i cant wait to waste money on more mods for my truck.

Ive been around cars my whole life, when I was younger, the guy who my mom was currently going out with was into cars, he owned a 78 Camaro which he used to always do stuff to and take it to the local drag races. Infact that was the first car I learned how to drive with, even though I was like 6 or 7.
Then my first car that I got was my own 92 Camaro which was given to me for Christmas of 04, and that thing had its own set of problems so I was always working on it, and yeah.. after that i've been into cars like crazy.

My dad had an Iroc-Z Camaro. It had the 350 block. Ive loved cars since then. I really like Big V-8's but with the way gas is i need a 4 banger. I got into 4 bangers when my buddy had his 240sx (Actually 2 of my buddies. They were older than me) ive been into cars seriously from about um 8 or 9 years old. I just never got around to actually working on them until about a year ago.

My dad used to work on cars ALL the time when I was a kid. At first I helped my mom clean up the blood or whatever other fluids (oil, antifreeze, etc.) that had been shed that day. Then, I wanted to "help" my dad make the messes described above. I pretty much just fetched tools. I still usually do a lot of tool-fetching today when my dad is doing the work on a car, but now I know enough to get me by... especially on my 1st car. I'm still a chicken about the new car...
Oh, that, and my little brother had Hotwheels and MicroMachines... If I wasn't totally caught up in that day's drama between Ken and Barbie, I was playing with my brother's cars.

Probably my dad. I've liked cars for a very long time though, so I can't really say "what" got me into cars. Its actually kind of weird that I like cars as much as I do, sense my mom doesn't know anything about cars(or driving for that matter). & my dad won't modify anything he owns. None of my friends know shit about cars(as much as they want to think they do).

When I was little...like 3 years old, my dad had a '79 regal with a built 350 chevy in it.
Sweet, my Dad had a '78 Regal Turbo. Bought back by GM before I was born after 3 turbo failures. Unfortunate, from the pictures it looks like it was a sweet ride. :)
I was born with my love. I made engine noises in the crib. I broke Mom's poor heart by choosing my first word to be "car" rather than "mommy." When I was 3, I could and would name the make and model of every car in shop parking lots. First turned the car key at three to help the neighbour jump start our visiting friend's car. At four, I advised the owner of the local Ford dealer that he had the wrong hubcaps on his car. In grade 1 at age 5, I skipped class to go look at the cars in the parking lot. I was found passed out near the bumper of one of them. :dunno:
I continued through the years with an unwavering love and an avid interest in researching them through magazines and books. I currently own an estimated 1500+ car magazines, with an average of 5 more bought each month, and an estimated 75 car books. I have taken, myself, approximately 8000 photos of cars, and have a 15,127-strong image library of car photos taken by others.
I love cars. :)

yup, similar here, although my mum knows a lot about cars, drives well and gives he audi the occasional motorway blast. (until the battery died)
my dad's not really into modifying his own car. it's fairly quick. he drives in a slightly mad way sometimes, and he's agreed to let me try an do a burnout in it "for my art project" (yea right...) he's owned everything from an aston martin DB4 to a ferrari 288 GTO 2+2 (i think that's the model) and others like a jaguar XJS or something. im not sure. but he's settled down into a nice golf now.
not many of my friends know about cars, and i spend a lot of time boring the shit outa them talking about cars and stuff.
i think the two things that acted as catalyst for my interest in cars would be the first car magazine i bought, on the cover it had a very heavily modified eclipse that i thought looked amazing. i still have the magazine. and also AF, i was looking for RB26DETT pics, found a pic, it turned out to be a model and the website had a link to AF, i've been here since.
it's a shame when your mates dont know a lot about cars, i have a friend called Bryan, not sure if any you guys know him, and he thinks his maro's fast but he can't even change the headgasket for it...

To understand the importance of cars in my life you have to understand my Grandfather...
He was what many would call a genius. Growing up he did very little school, he had to help around the house alot. Anyways he went on to be a pilot in the Army during WWII and they paid for his education so long as he would train new pilots. So, obviously, he did. He became an engineer and was on the design team for the SR-71 Blackbird. He has all kinds of medals and shit. Needless to say he wanted to teach me EVERYTHING there was to know about mechanics. Me, being the young eager person I was, didn't give a shit. I wanted to play hockey.
He tried over and over to teach me how cars worked, how to work on them, etc. etc. but I'd be like OK Grandpa, I'm trying to shoot at the goal, you're in the way.
He died when I was young, and to this day I wish I had paid attention to him.
I quit playing hockey in middle school and when I got into high school my sister was dating the Captain of our hockey team. She told him that I played travel etc. and he told me I was going to play for the high school. I told him to fuck off. He beat the shit outta me. I then became the first Freshman to ever play in the MSHL.
So at the first game one of his friends came up to me after the game and said this:
"Damn Andrew, by the time you graduate you're going to have 2 school records, most penalty minutes and the only player to take his skate off to stab another player!"
His name was Jack, 19 years old, car enthusiast and photographer. Shortly after I became good friends with Jack and alot of older boys and we formed a car club/race team called Trax Revolution. Since I was 14 at its creation, I couldn't drive, so they taught me how cars worked and I became the team mechanic (of sorts). I then made it a point to honor my grandfather's life by learning everything there was to know about cars.
I have a long, long way to go.

I then made it a point to honor my grandfather's life by learning everything there was to know about cars.
I have a long, long way to go.

when i was real real young my dad would always get me up on sundays to watch the nascar races and we'd sit there and scream and yell for earnhardt and damn did we yell. and i have two older brothers who are kinda into cars. but it wasnt till i was like 11 or 12 that i really started to get interested and want to learn about cars. and of course i went through the ricer stage. my freshmen year i hung out with the seniors who were into cars, imports mostly and i would learn what i could. and then i found this site and AF literally tought me everything i know. or most of it. other than that, meeting doug herbert the snap-on top fuel drag racer kicked me into high gear, me and a few buddies had dinner with him and now im here basically.

i'll ask what model it was tomorrow. but yea...besides i dont think it was that much at the time he had it. he's owned a lot of different cars over the years.
i supopse my grandfather (mum's side) has a lot to do with my interest in cars, he owned a dealership called the gypsie mead, they sold rolls-royce and bentleys etc... he also flew a jaguar E-type over a bridge amongst other things.

Matchbox cars...
Yes! I had a red ferrari testarossa it kicked ass and never left my right hand! At one point I started to fade out in 99 but then I went to the airport and got an issue of dupont registry for shit's an giggles. I opened it up and the first page I saw was these three cars one yellow (murceilago) an orange one (diablo) and this mysterious silver car with these insane cuts in the door with the doors up to. Turns out after six months of searching and press releases it was an S7! That's what got me into the S7 a stupid ad from a dealership in sunrise blvd. Ever since then I haven't stopped with supercars especially the S7. My first fave was an F1 Lm :p and the 911 Gt1 (strassenversion) as well. What got me into imports wasn't 2f2f like most of you ricers, but rather thanks to BFG's ad "Track meat" Featuring mad maxes R34 (Thanks Tyndago for telling me) I still have the Ad scanned into my comp but mine Inet is down so.

Forgive me, I don't mean to insult anyone, but The Fast and the Furious kinda ruined it for me. A lot of good people came into the scene after it was released but the number of people who just slap an intake on and talk all kinds of shit is much larger. After it became the "cool" thing to do, too many people who don't really care jumped on the scene.
For example, I used to go to these gatherings at a placed called Capital Expo Center years ago. It was by far the greatest thing I had ever experienced for the first few months. So many people with so much time, money, and energy poured into their cars would meet, some races would go on, and nobody got mad at anybody. It was a fantastic place to be. I learned 90% of what I know today going to these things and talking to older and much more experienced tuners. A few months after I started going to these things "The Fast and the Furious" came out and it all went to shit. I met a lot of cool new people that gained interest from the movie and used it in a good way, but the atmosphere was so different.
Soon enough kids started bringing knives and guns, racing for money and each others' cars, and the fun was gone. Police actually started coming and arresting people instead of sitting and monitoring. Some of the police before would come out and talk to us and tell us stories of their youth doing the same thing. Those were the same police coming out fully armed for their own protection. Then about 2 months after it all started a kid died when racing because the guy he was racing against started falling back and bumped his rear end INTENTIONALLY and he went off an overpass and plummetted (sp) 60+ feet at 80mph or so to his and his girlfriend's death. It made me sick to my stomach and I never went again.
I've stayed ultimately track with the few exceptions of my immaturity prevailing and me racing some kid on the street and blowing them away. I've taken to heart that anyone worth racing will do it on the track, in front of everyone, and with time slips that don't lie. Those are also the peolpe who will shake your hand afterwards, win or lose, and give you advice if they can. Not clip you so you fall to your death.
No offense to anyone who got into it from the F&F, I mean no disrespect. I don't consider you apart of the crowd that screwed it up for me and I'm happy that you found a joy in life. If it wasn't a joy in your life that you cherished, you wouldn't be here. I guess I just wanted to get that out...

I'd say it was a thing since birth, my mum had a Green Mini which I used to love being driven around in, then I started getting infactuated by Ferraris and red cars in general and then Porsches, though I didn't know much about the Lamborghini Countach until I was 6, which is surprising... When I was 8 at school, we went to the community library to get books out, instead of getting a book out though, I always got an issue of the now defunct "New Zealand Car"
All up it's spiralled into a huge and expensive hobby, I've got about 700 car magazines from all over the world and in different languages, 60 or so model cars, a collection of about 500 or so matchbox cars and in the space of about 3 and a half years I've had 3 cars and am already planning my 4th one.
Also worth noting is that my dad had Honda Accords from the day I was born (Well he had a Ford Cortina up til I was about 6 months) up until I was about 14, bar a Toyota Prado in between the '95 and the '99 and I reckon that's what developed into quite an admiration for the Accord.

xviciousx, well said about the F&F. Did pretty much the same for me. I was always open to other cars, but I had an interest in what we now call rice for several years, starting back in '96 or so. F&F ruined it.
I also got interested in drifting for several years, starting around '98, when almost nobody knew of it. I've already called off my interest in it (too many kids who don't know anything sliding on the brink of control around everywhere and calling it drifting), but this next F&F drift movie will just make it worse.......

i would say my brother mike, he got into cars like his little red laser. he put a 3r racing muffler and 3 inch exhaust tip on it. that thing sounded and felt fast. for a 1.8 i was surprised how quick and how agile it was. some of his stories and my parents stories. my dads vega, and nova. and my moms 2 chargers, javilin < ooooh yeah, and her pinto. i eventually got to a point where i thought each car has its own personality, and there were times where your car would say f you im not taking that corner < ironically thats when you start to hear those tires scream. but it was all about that little red laser. it was fast. would smoke first through 3rd < third would wind down. it put a run on my friends 86 camaro with the 305. and ild win if there were twists and turns... something about taking a 25 mph on ramp at 85, is fricken cool. but it sucks now. the more i know about cars, the less i feel the personality of the car. but hey now i can go fast and actually know what that clunk is when i brake something.

I got into cars because of some movies like gone in 60 seconds, f&f, 2f2f, etc. I loved seeing all those modded & shiny cars.
Video games were also a major contributor.
Movies, Magazines and games helped me learn what I now know even though its not alot.

Here's what I think of...
Fast & Furious. I think it's makes a complete mockery of the street scene in general. To the serious performers it's really not fair all because some big shot producer probably saw (HEARD) a civic with vinyl's an a nice paintjob and said "HEY" $ at the box office lets make a movie about fake racers and glitz and glamour shit. Now the end result is everybody wanting to be like Vin Deisel and go out race with "NOS" and make there cars look (what they call cool) Huge "ATTACK" style kit and lets not forget the ever popular easy way to lower your car's hieght and performance and stability all in one! Cut the springs so now not only are you scraping the shit out of your huge ATTACK kit on the turns but attracting attention by who else but the cops. These kids think it's like the movie... It's rediculious, they give the cops an attitude and do stupid things like strap a foldiers coffee can to the back so now it sounds like your ripping ass as you go 80 by the cop wich they will probably not go any faster then that anyway. The reving of the stupid SRT-4's BOV's doesn't help either (News flash! A Bov don't mean shit if you don't have the power to go with it let alone drive manual in the first place!)
These kids today :frown: All they do is make noise, piss people off and do burnout's and think they're cool... Worst part is for the people like us... Me being a hardcore performance enthusiast, Yea I would like to get a GT kit, Advan light weight rims and a nice High DF spoiler wich do all attract attention but they serve a purpose, Hence why they're on the car but cops assume it's just another punk. If I could or in the future I would like to carbon everything why? Because it kills weight and makes the body stronger. (My theme - Every once counts) Back to topic - The thing that ticks me off is they (rice boys) think a spoiler's an such make the car faster (funny) Fwi - Buddy FWD's don't need downforce on the rear wheels! All your doing is slowing your car down...
Here's my overall theory on it...
Real deal imports - Vr4,Supra,Lancer Evo's,S2k's,NSX,Subaru 2.5 or higher,Silvia's, Skylines for the most part... (R32 GTS don't count lol) and of course FD's aka Rx7.
Fake aka rice material - Srt-4,cobalt,galant,accord,celica and civic's more but to lazy to list...
Not all Import's are/should be labeled as "rice" as I see it anyway...

An SRT4 is rice material? even in spite of the fact that the engine is bullet proof and Mopar have readily available performance parts? The SRT4 is a reveation as far as accessible performance goes.
Same thing with Civics and Accords, yes they're slow stock, but so are Silvias (Which you think are the real deal), but there is a massive aftermarket for them if you want to make them fast if you're that way inclined. It's a rather silly generalisation IMHO.

Do you see 50+ riced out SRT-4's every friday, rev'in their Bov's thiking there hot shit? The one's with the gotti hair style that think they can take anything...? Fwd four cylinder dodge with a turbo... = limited potential....
I know silvia's are slow there a 4 cylinder but you can't tell me that an H22a or even a B16 in an Fwd civic has the same potential as Rwd Sr20Dett... Am I right? Even 13's have more potential due to the fact there Rwd. I know there are low models for silvia's and skylines which also can be riced out but the even the 13's we see in the states are nice due to the fact there so rare. & If they due have as much potential you say they do, Then why are silvia's still more popular in competitions in japan, Why don't they make more civic competiton cars? I think your getting at accessability and bang for the buck. An Srt-4 is a great bang for the buck the civic meh... They both have a plethora of parts as far as aftermarket but does that mean there good? More to rice if you ask me...

An SRT4 is rice material?
Well, Dodge had the ability to put that engine in a regular Neon, which would have been cool.
Instead they have a plethora of scoops, fins, wings, etc, and go POOSH POOSH way too loud in my ear when they go past :thumbsdow

I dont mean to add fuel to the off topic fire but anyone who still uses the word "ricer" needs to be shot. You obviously can't accept the fact that other people may have different tastes than you. It's like the whole spinner rims thing..some like it, some don't. Find me a street leagal car and I'll bet I can find a faster street legal civic. saleen, if i offend you, sorry. you are a respected member here and i'm just voicing my opinion like you

You demonstrate you want your opinion to be accepted, yet leave no room for those of opposite opinion.
In addition, you make the assumption that the term "rice" is only derogatory, and not simply the title of the style.
I'm glad to know I should be shot.

Can I use your body for a shield after you're shot, heep? Because I know they'll be coming after me next, but i'll fight back wearing a black shirt that only says "Got Rice?"

I'm glad to know I should be shot. My statement came across the wrong way. I just think that people shouldn't be placed in groups according to their particular tastes. People driving lifted 4x4s aren't all rednecks. People driving shackled up Darts aren't all hillbillies. People driving Porches aren't all rich pansies. My bad for wording my opinion like that. Burry the hatchet?

Now now, the man is indeed entitled to his own opinion and tastes.
(My gut should be able to stop a couple bullets by now...) ;)

Indeed. I actually agree with you wholeheartedly.
It's just amusing to poke sticks at ricers
J/K, hatchet buried. :)

Sadly F&F got me into cars. it started with the movie, then i started looking at performance mods, then started wondering how it all worked. finally i found howstuffworks.com and AF, where nearly all of my knowledge comes from. then once i had learned how all this crap works i looked back on the movie with disgust, damn hollywood ruining the image of a japanese car.
I think rice is more of an attitude than a particular car. it's more of the "I'm going to pimp out my car and it's going to be the best out there" attitude. There are people who add loud mufflers to their cars and that's it, i wouldn't concider all of them ricers, some of them know their car's total crap and that it hasn't done anything for them, sure they're damned annoying and i want to break their damn car but they aren't the cocky little shits that go around revving their engines, doing burnouts, "drifting" or whatever you want to call what those dumbasses think they're doing.
F&F has brought a bunch of people to cars but it has created a whole lot of rice, killed a whole bunch of people, and ruined certain cars for all of us (honda civics come to mind). this new movie's just going to ruin the whole drifting scene, you're going to have some retarded kid in his moms accord go around a turn, yank the handbrake and fly into a post and die. the little good that it has brought isn't worth all the crap.
Oh, and if anyone's interested (which i doubt you are) I'm planning on making cars my career. I've already applied to the university of waterloo in mechanical engineering and want to work for come car company desining cars or parts (preferably germans over americans, they go for engineering rather than selling cars). and it's all thanks to my love in cars.
